Latest Images of the Gen. Santos City Fishport Complex

Posted by bariles On March - 30 - 2008 9 COMMENTS

Had the chance to visit the General Santos City Fishport Complex last week with friend Leonard Pe and Johnjohn who were there to shoot and tape the ongoings (for a video project) at the Market One where all the giant tuna which are downloaded daily.

As early as 6:30am we were already at the Fishport Office, trying on pairs of plastic boots that may fit our feet. You see, ever since the complex was accredited by the European Union and the US of A, it has reinforced its very strict and stringent rules and hygienic standards for everyone wanting to come in ((including wearing the proper attire). And if no have no business being there, better keep out.

Here is a gallery of the pictures I took at the Market One of the GenSan Fishport Complex:

Came across some aerial shots of GenSan and Sarangani Bay from LANTAW, Allan Barredos Multiply site. Was so impressed with them that I immediately contacted Allan (who hails from Koronadal) and got his permission to feature them here.

So here, ladies and gentlemen, are (so far) the most awesome aerial shots of Gen. Santos City and Sarangani Bay that I’ve ever laid my eyes on. Thanks again Allan.

You will know that it’s really summer in Gen. Santos City when Dolores Tropicana Resort Hotel starts campaigning for their Bikini Open, a competition for the sexiest hunks and babes which they have been conducting since the late 90s.

This year’s search will happen on April 19, right at their wide beach front in Barangay Tambler, where I was invited to be one of the judges. :)

He was met at the GenSan International Airport runway by his former political foes, GenSan City Mayor Jun Acharon and Congresswoman Darlene Antonino-Custodio of the 1st District of South Cotabato. Meet Jan Ced, the “Father” of Internet in GenSan City

Posted by bariles On March - 24 - 2008 12 COMMENTS

Jan Ced, Father of the Internet in GenSan

If you ask any internet user in General Santos City about the history of the Internet in the city, and who the Father of Internet in GenSan city is, all you would get is a blank stare or a quizzical look.

In spite of the presence everywhere of the signs of the city’s connectivity to the information superhighway like the ubiquitous Internet cafes, the Wi-Fi equipped coffee shops, bars and fast food outlets and a good number of internet-wired commercial buildings, it is a pity that only a handful know about its origins.

In fact, only a few really know who was instrumental in wiring Gensan to the Internet.  Now, meet the “Father” of Internet in GenSan City.

Here is his story.

The internet was still unheard of to most people when 29 year-old Jan Ced put up his Omnitronics Computer shop in 1994 at the Halieus Mall (now RD Plaza) in downtown Gensan. Ironically, this Economics graduate from De la Salle University has hardly ever used a computer before.

Prior to this, he has been helping his father run Mincorn, the family’s corn trading business and even manning their milling facilities in Bukidnon for months at a time. That was where he would meet his future wife Aileen in 1990.

After the wedding, Jan brought his new bride to Gensan and started to raise a family. Their eldest, Yna was born less than a year later.

In 1994, Jan met his namesake Jan Hornes, a Norweigean who is married to a Filipina. Jan was a computer technician in their country who was planning to put up a computer store in the city.

Although with little or barely any knowledge in running a computer, Jan’s keen mind predicted that it soon be a common office and home staple replacing the typewriter. He proposed a partnership with the foreigner after getting his father’s blessing.

A few weeks later, Omnitronics Incorporated was born offering computer units, accessories, supplies, parts and services. With Jan Ced as President and industrial partner Jan Hornes as Operations Manager, they took in a computer programmer, Eric Manalastas as Marketing Head and called themselves the Dream Team.

In only a few months time, due to the store’s proximity to the city’s economic district, business grew rapidly. Jan Ced’s prediction was starting to come true. Demand for computers and computer spare parts and services was rising at a fast pace.

Notre Dame of Dadiangas University, which was then a college, started offering courses of Information Technology thus increasing the city’s pool of skilled computer technicians and programmers.

Other companies were hiring more and more computer-savvy applicants.

At this point, Jan Ced started taking computer crash courses and updated himself on the latest on information technology. It was then that he learned about a phenomenon linking computers around the globe called the “Internet”. This got his attention.

That year in 1995, only Manila had access to the Internet through Mozcom, the Philippines’ first commercial Internet Service Provider owned by Willy Gan and William Torres. It was around that time that they announced their plans to look for partners around the Philippines which will offer different levels of connectivity to corporate and individual users.

Sensing this as a golden opportunity to complement his computer shop, he lost no time in contacting the Mozcom owners and flew his team to Manila to help him pitch his proposal of franchising their services in Gensan.

Two days later, Jan Ced’s team came home bringing with them the good news that Gensan will soon be wired to the Internet and yes, Omnitronics will be at the forefront of making it happen.

Finally, after months of frantic preparations, trainings and orientation within his organization, on January 21, 1996, Jan Ced pushed the Start Key that historically linked up General Santos City to the information superhighway.

That cemented his love affair with the world of Information Technology and sealed his fate as the Father of Internet in GenSan.

The story does not end there however.

In 1997, he built the 5-storey Plaza Nova Building, the first internet-wired edifice in Gensan which soon housed the AMA Computer College and his reorganized Omnitronics which has been transformed into purely an Internet Service Provider, having sold off its hardware section.

In 2006, Jan opened Transcode One Solutions, a Medical Transcription Company designed to provide medical transcription services to individual practitioners, hospitals, etc. in the U.S., Canada, Australia, Europe, etc. and training modules to individuals wanting to go into this field.

That same year, he put up the Mabuhay Technopark Corporation which will operate an I.T. Park or zone at a 2.8 hectare lot in GenSan. He envisions this as a venue to develop properties for locators, I.T. companies and Business Process Outsourcing Companies. Operating in a 24/7 fully-secured community, it will be a one-stop facility cable of carrying voice, video and data services that would deliver a superior, reliable and secured network communications and back-up power supply.

C0mplementing these is an incubation center consisting of nine “intelligent offices” and support facilities such as three conference facilities/training rooms, mini-exhibition halls and a cafeteria.

With this I.T. park recently approved by the Economic Processing Zone Authority, Jan Ced will eventually find out if this grandiose dream of his will once again fire up a second wind of developments for the region’s I.T. prospects just as he did the first time around when he introduced the Internet to the nation’s Tuna Capital twelve years ago.

ADDENDUM: Jan Ced was just elected the President of the Gen. Santos City Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Inc. for the period 2008-2010.  Mabuhay Technopark Corporation is opening in 2009 fully.

How people spend Good Friday in Boracay

Posted by bariles On March - 23 - 2008 2 COMMENTS

How do the people in Boracay spend Good Friday? To find out for myself, I trooped to this small island in the Visayas during the Holy Week last year. The experience was so surreal that no attempts has been made on my part to describe it even until now. What I could remember though was the fact that there were “B’s” all around – beer, bikini babes, bare torsos, barbecue, beach-ready bodies, bimbos, boylets, booze, and the music of Bob Marley and the Beachboys!

My Good Friday images in GenSan

Posted by bariles On March - 21 - 2008 9 COMMENTS

It was 10am this morning when i dropped by the Our Lady of Peace and Good Voyage Parish (or Dadiangas Parish) in downtown General Santos City for my Good Friday visit. The Seven Last Words Reflections won’t be up till noon and so I still had time to say my prayers.

After my short conversation with the Lord, I sat down and looked around me, trying to reacquiant myself with this place where my parents were married 47 years ago and where I and all my siblings and nieces were baptized, confirmed, said our confessions and received our first communion.

It has been a long time since I entered this church and despite the totally different interiors (she had undergone renovation), she still emitted the warm, and familiar comforting feeling that made me realize, “Yes! I am HOME.”

Here are the images from that homecoming which lasted until the procession in the afternoon…

The Davao Food Appreciation Tour I (A Taste of Paradise in Eden)

Posted by bariles On March - 20 - 2008 7 COMMENTS

FAT logo

I have a problem with food.

No, let me re-state that. I have a problem declining food being offered to me, especially when it’s FREE (!). Hehe! So when my friend Blogie Robillo of Davao asked me to join them in the Davao Food Appreciation Tour (FAT) last weekend (where a group of bloggers try out the menu and offerings of various restaurants in exchange for reviews online), I had to cancel all my appointments and agreed to go.

Owing to bad luck though (losing my wallet & my cash, ATM, cards, etc with it last Friday nite), I only joined them on the 3rd day of the gourmet fest, Sunday, March 16 which luckily, as I found out from the other food bloggers with us, was their most fun-filled day.

Since Ria (whom I met in January at the Socsargen Blog Seminar) who coordinated this whole FAT kept reminding me that I have to be in Davao by 9am that Sunday, I set up my phone alarm at 4:15am to be able to catch the 5:30 trip aboard Yellow Bus. So, with my companion Mars (who could harldy keep his eyes open as I dragged him out of bed) in tow, we boarded Aircon Bus #72 at the city terminal. Once seated and after paying for our fare, we slept all along the 150-km. ride to the Durian Capital.

We were in luck. We arrived at McDo Matina, the meeting place before 9am. In a little while, Ria showed up and immediately introduced us to the other Davao-based bloggers like Migs, Dom, Tiara, Winston, Gwing, Andrew and Angel. Later on, Blogie arrived followed by Google exec and Manila-based Aileen with Jay.

Then off we went up the mountains of Davao for our first stop, Eden Nature Park, the region’s most famous mountain resort owned by the Ayalas, located at the Toril District.

After a pleasurable 30-minute ride on board Dom’s vehicle, we arrived at Eden and were greeted by a welcome sight of greenery and the sweet scent of pine trees all around us. In a short while, we were herded into an open multi-cab for a tour around the 40-hectare resort.

The 1st time I took this tour was 3 years ago and during that time, I kept falling asleep so I couldn’t remember much about it. This time, I was wide-eyed and all ears to Ryan, our amiable guide who fed us bits and pieces about the abundance of nature’s beauty all around us.

The 35 minute or so tour took us to places like the Fishing Village, the Hydroponic Vegetable Garden (where veggies are amazingly grown sans soil), Holiday Lodge, Prayer Garden, Flower Garden (and its natural ampitheater), Lola’s Garden, the organic Vegetable & Herb Garden (where our guide gave us a sampling of the some of the herb’s aromatic leaves) and the upcoming Tinubdan Park (featuring art sculptures depicting the various tribes of Davao and the Mythic Mountain with its take on the creation of mankind from different folklore).

What took my breath away though is the site from various stops during the tour of Davao City and the Davao Gulf down below from where we were 30,000 feet above sea level.

Before the much-awaited buffet at the Eden Kiosk, my younger friends (now including fellow “general” Mikko who arrived late) tried the rope ride ala-Indiana Jones, at the Kid’s Playground nearby. I only ventured on it once but I was so heavy that I bounced so hard when I reached the end of the ride, a feeling that I had to endure when riding a bump-car when I was little. But the other guys? Gosh!!! They didn’t want to stop. Consider this pic…

Indiana Jones2

And this…

Indiana Andrew

Finally, laughing and panting and all the more famished from the running and jumping, it was time for us to join the 7 or so family groups inside the Kiosk for our lunch.

The kiosk which was more like a large green house to me had no airconditioning but was comfortably cool since it had screens for walls. The L-shaped hall was colorfully decked with what were like yards and yards of multi-hued cloth adding a festive touch to the place.

The Kiosk

Near the main doors of the kiosk was the two-way buffet table (and its interesting tribal-themed centerpiece, shown below) filled with all sorts of Filipino dishes. Beside it was a separate and smaller table for salads and dessert.

Centerpiece

I first tried the greenish pumpkin soup which despite its icky color, had just the right flavor to it, not too salty and not too sweet. I liked it so much that I had a 2nd serving later on.

Not wanting to fill myself up too much, I skipped on rice and headed next to try the half-carved cucumber stuffed with chopped tomatoes, onions and other spices. It needed to be seasoned a little but was a good complement to the “tortang bangus” which Migs (who was seating beside me) was also eating with relish. We both agreed that this spanish dish was a “must-try” not only for its taste which it owes to the spices in its marinade but also to its tender and boneless meatflakes.

Eden Kiosk Food

Later, I tried the breaded pork ribs (but not before asking for forgiveness to my God being the Lenten Week). This one did not disappoint either and reminded me of my Kapampangan Dad’s cooking, since he liked dressing up his meat with flour. The batter had the sufficient thickness to it and did not steal the thunder away from the meat.

For my main dish, I opted for the Filipino specialty, the chicken adobo. Eden’s version is pan-dried with almost no sauce at all, sprinkled with bits of fried crispy garlic. I was expecting the meat to be very salty due to its semi-dry nature but lo, and behold, it was not.

What impressed me most though was the abundance of salads and greens at the separate buffet table. I learned that all of these are from Eden’s gardens, organically grown! I lost no time in having my fill of these healthy spread as my final intake and even before I finished it off, was already planning mentally my next trip there, this time along with my family from GenSan.
