7000++ fans watch Pacquiao-Diaz fight at Lagao Gym in GenSan

Posted by bariles On June - 29 - 2008 16 COMMENTS

More than 7,000 cheering fans including GenSan City Mayor Jun Acharon, stood up inside the air-conditioned Lagao Gym when their local town hero Manny Pacquaio delivered the final blow to David Diaz’s face to win his new title as the new WBC Lightweight Champion of the World.

The air-conditioned Lagao Gym in Gen. Santos City

All hell broke loose when from the wide 6,000 lumen screen in front of them, the “generals” (as how the locals call themselves) saw how Diaz kissed the floor at the ring inside the Mandalay Bay Resort in Las Vegas in the middle of the 9th round, instantly making him another statistic added to Pacquiao’s reputation as “THE MEXICUTIONER‘.

GenSan City Mayor while being interviewed by GMA Reporter.  Beside him is First Lady Dr. Rose. The mayor announced a HERO’S WELCOME for the champ when he comes home to GenSan.

The whole gym shook and rattled as my 7,000++ townmates all simultaneously released whoops and shrieks of cheers and delight which went on for around 2 minutes. The noise was deafening, the energy was overwhelming, and goose pimples were the order of that moment for me.

It was the most heavily-attended fight of Pacquiao at the Lagao Gym so far, ever since the local government of Mayor Acharon started airing his bouts here.

According to the mayor, for one, there was no corporate sponsor requiring them to buy liquor or whatever brand they were promoting just to be given a ticket inside.  It was all for free since Congresswoman Darlene Antonino-Custodio (Pacquiao’s opponent in the only fight which made him lose to a tiny wisp of a woman) footed the bill at Solar Sports which had the rights to air the pay-per-view telecast.

Another thing is the wide coverage of all the major radio networks of the impending FREE telecast at the gym two weeks prior to the fight date.  This was unlike before when only BOMBO RADYO and GMA Super Radyo reported about the free telecast (the former because it was the liquor company’s media partner and the latter because they were Manny’s new TV home).

In the end, I should say that this was Manny’s best fight ever, only because what he delivered this time was a SOLID KNOCKOUT, one thing that his countrymen has been asking for a long long time.
Congratulations Pacman! We, the “generals” are so proud of you! See you at your motorcade here! Tagay!!!!

Watch out for my post on Pacquiao’s homecoming and hero’s welcome in GenSan here. Check back often or better still, subscribe to my POSTS with your EMAIL Address. Ayos ba? :)

Congresswoman Custodio sponsors FREE LIVE “pay-per-view” Airing of Diaz-Pacquiao Fight in GenSan

Posted by bariles On June - 27 - 2008 11 COMMENTS

I am featuring this poster designed by my good friend Jun Pilapil for the coming FREE LIVE TELECAST of the Diaz-Pacquiao World Lightweight Championship Fight (Lethal Combination)on Sunday, June 29, 2008 at the Lagao Gym here in Gen. Santos City.

This is an initiative of the Representative of the 1st Congressional District of South Cotabato, Honorable Darlene Antonino-Custodio in coordination with the City Mayor’s Office of GenSan to enable the “generals” to watch and cheer for their hometown champion on real time sans commercials on Pay-Per-View, a tradition which started way back in 2006.

Paying for this privilege is the kind congresswoman who will shell out P330,000 to Solar Sports, an amount which as far as I can recall is the largest fee asked by the sports channel from the city since the LGU started this more than two years ago.  In every fight, Solar kept on upping the ante for the rights to the live telecast.  Gosh!

As early as two months ago, the City Mayor wrote Pacman’s brother and now Barangay Apopong Captain Roel Pacquiao in the latter’s capacity as President of Manny Pacquiao Promotions to sponsor this live airing at the gym.  Roel in his response wrote back that they cannot acquiesce to the mayor’s request because they already turned over all the rights to Solar Sports and that they have no funds to finance it.

That gave the congresswoman the signal to pursue sponsoring the “live airing” herself.  As am writing this though, I have heard reports that “Lethal Combination” will also be shown “LIVE” at the Barangay Apopong Covered Court on Sunday sponsored by you-know-who.

Oh well, the more, the merrier….

Anyway, the Congressional Office through the City Mayor’s Office has already distributed 7,000 tickets among the city’s 26 barangays thru the Barangay Captains.

As with the past fights of Pacman, the Lagao Gym which has been the site of past PBA Games will open its gates as early as 8:00 AMNo food and drinks, bladed weapons, and the like will be allowed inside the airconditioned venue and everybody will be frisked at the doors.

Hope to see you all there!  I will be at the main door. :)

Renovated GenSan City Mayor’s Office Opens

Posted by bariles On June - 26 - 2008 12 COMMENTS

After almost six months, the newly-renovated City Mayor’s Office at the Gen. Santos City Hall was finally unveiled to the public during a simple blessing ceremony on June 12, 2008.

The unveiling was timed right after the flag-raising program of the 110th Independence Day celebration at the Gen. Paulino Santos Park and so most of the attendees there were the same people at the blessing.

There was Honorable Koji Mitsui, First Secretary and Consul of the Japanese Consulate in Davao and Honorable Lalik Malu Partawana, Consul General of the Indonesian Consulate, also in Davao who waited patiently for the late officiating priest to arrive outside the door.  Good thing that these two distinguished guests were entertained by the combined charms of the ladies of the Sangguniang Panglungsod (City Council) led by ABC Chair Lourdes Casabuena and Councilors Nepnep Natividad and Meg Santos.

In a short while, everyone was led inside by City Mayor Jun Acharon and his wife, Dr. Rose and got to see for the first time the interiors of the sparklingly-new mayor’s office.

Most agreed that the renovation team (which includes local Architect Michael Ang) of the mayor did a good job in transforming what was once an ordinary, cluttered, and ugly mess of a maze into a well-illuminated, brightly painted, tastefully-decored fully-functional modern office which could be mistaken for a hotel or bank lobby or even a first class hospital.

Here are the pictures to show for it.

Posted by bariles On June - 24 - 2008 13 COMMENTS

This year Two thousand and eight (2008) is indeed the YEAR OF EXCELLENCE for the city of General Santos and her young and dynamic “generals”, as proclaimed by City Mayor Pedro B. Acharon, Jr.!  For one, another group of individuals has again made us proud.

Two young choreographers from General Santos City shone at the recent Wifi Body Independent Contemporary Dance Festival Young Choreographers Competition held at the Nicanor Abelardo (Main Theater), Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) last June 12-16, 2008 by taking home the top prize.

Wifi Body Independent Contemporary Dance Festival which is presented by the World Dance Alliance- Philippine Choreographers’ Network, the Cultural Center of the Philippines and the Japan Foundation is the biggest gathering of independent dance artists and companies in the Philippines.

On the other hand, Deejay De Vera‘s solo piece “Suguilanon Ug awit sa Kahaponon” also impressed them that it finished third among fourteen finalists selected from all over the country.

The 23-year old Lagare is the Second Winner of the Wifi-CCP-JF NeXtage Award.

Lagare and De Vera are members of the Ramon Magsaysay Memorial Colleges Teatro Ambahanon Contemporaryo Dance Company, one of the Philippines’ Ten Most Outstanding Young Dance and Theater Companies which is under the tutelage of Bing Cariño.  A constant presence in various city cultural programs and presentations (like this one, CLICK HERE),  they have been wowing everyone with their gravity-defying contemporary dance interpretations.

By the way, their trip to Manila was made possible with the help and support of the Sangguniang Panlungsod’s Committee on Education chaired by Councilor Meg Santos.

CONGRATULATIONS GUYS!!!! We are so proud of you!!!

P2Billion Robinsons Gen. Santos Mall begins construction

Posted by bariles On June - 20 - 2008 300 COMMENTS

After years and years of speculation, the wait is finally over!

Robinsons has just begun the construction of what should be one of the biggest investment projects in the Tuna Capital of the Philippines, General Santos City in years!

This project, a first-class shopping center reportedly costing P2 billion pesos and to be known as Robinsons General Santos, is under the Robinsons Land Corporation (RLC), a JG Summit Company headed by Chairman Emeritus, John Gokongwei, Jr.

Situated in an 8.5 hectare property acquired by the Gokongwei’s in the late 80s along the corner of Jose Catolico Avenue, National Highway and the Bula-Lagao Road, this proposed edifice is about 500 meters away from the KCC Mall and the Gaisano Mall.

Clearing of the land has began almost a week ago after a series of meetings between RLC people and the local authorities including GenSan Mayor Pedro Acharon, Jr.   It will be remembered that years ago, before a series of bombings rocked the city, they were supposedly set on starting this project back then and have even applied for a building permit.  Eventually due to the barbaric terroristic incidents, they held off….. until now.

Robinsons

The Robinsons Gen. Santos site at corner J. Catolico Avenue (going right) and Bula-Lagao road (going left)

And so with Robinsons’ impending move to go ahead with their project, the city government will be awarding them incentives in form of tax breaks.  “Mall operations” is one of the top  “investment priority areas” under the city’s New Investment Code.

Robinsons Gen. Santos will be a two-storey mall which will house the company’s flagship stores- Robinsons Department Store, Robinsons Supermarket, Robinsons Appliances, Handyman Do It Center plus four Robinsons’ cinemas.

Aside from that is a Bingo center, an Amusement center and lots and lots of rentable spaces for retail shops and boutiques, restaurants and dining establishments.

More than 500 workers will be hired for the construction of the biggest of all of the Gensan malls and about 700 personnel will be employed once it becomes operational.  I learned that the Robinson’s management has pledged that 80% of their new hires will all be locals which redounds well for the benefit of the city’s new graduates and unemployed but skilled workforce.

Bula-Lagao Road

Meanwhile, according to a very reliable source, the SM group for its part is now on its final talks with the owners of a prime 8-hectare property along Santiago Boulevard which they have optioned to lease for their own mall.

And with NCCC of Davao recently opening its warehouse outlet at Kimball Plaza‘s old bodega at Leon Llido Street, signs may be pointing to their eventual entry into the Mall business in GenSan considering that they also have a four-hectare property along the National Highway.

Wow!  All these only mean one thing – more and more investors are now seeing Gen. Santos city in a new light and are beginning to realize the truth in the Tuna Capital of the Philippines being named twice as the Most Competitive Mid-Sized City in the country.

Robinsons Gen. Santos is scheduled to open during the 2nd quarter of 2009.  Check back here for regular updates.

Updates:  More photos of the mall site…

East Asia Royale’s Rombar Bartolome- Cornmiller turned GenSan Hotelier

Posted by bariles On June - 18 - 2008 18 COMMENTS

When 32-year old Romeo Bartolome stepped off his plane after it landed at the old Buayan airport in General Santos City one morning in May 1993, he instantly liked what he saw.

“I was right away struck by the wide expanse of greenery right before my eyes and the clear unpolluted skies above, things which reminded me of my home in the US where I have relocated my family,” he recalls.

Rombar has flown to this southern city in Mindanao upon the invitation of his Kuya Efren who was the Chairman and President of their family-owned E.A. Bartolome Management Corporation.

The civil engineering graduate at the FEU was at that time working as stockroom clerk at the Signet Electronics Corporation in California juggling babysitting chores on their 3-year old son Rabmor with his doctor wife Aymie, who was working at Mayo Clinic as an Ob-Gyne.

“I migrated to the US after realizing that the hustle and bustle of traffic-wracked and polluted Manila was not a good place to raise my family. What used to be a one hour trip to my hometown in Bulacan now takes me three hours to maneuver,” he explains.

The Bartolome family was into manufacturing corn feeds through their Nutrimix Feeds Corporation plant in their hometown in Bulacan. With business booming, they needed to source out more suppliers. All-year round typhoon-free Gensan was the best logical choice to put up a buying station.

“Gensan for the family was the unknown wild frontier” Rombar says, adding: “My brother knew that, being the adventurous type, I easily fit the bill to head the operations there.”

Kuya Efren lost no time in flying to America to convince his younger brother to go back to the country enticing him with double of what he and his wife were earning collectively.

Romeo was hesitant, worried about his lack of knowledge on the corn feed trade. But it was something that his brother said that moved him to consider: Lahat ng bagay, napag-aaralan. Everything can be learned.

Besides, Kuya Efren reminded him, Rombar will be his own boss.

That was the “icing on the cake.”

The excited young man, upon settling here immediately buckled down to work, roaming the countryside, meeting farmers and establishing his headquarters at a rented warehouse near Makar wharf.

Knowing nobody here, he started expanding his network of friends from all walks of society, be it in the government, media, military or business sector.

One of them was Cesar Seranillo, a pioneer in the corn feed industry. Sensing the sincerity on the young man and his desire to learn, he started teaching him the ropes of the business. Not long after, Rombar became a competent semi-dry corn classifier and an astute trader.

“Lahat ng bagay, napag-aaralan.”

Eventually, his family in the US joined him in their new home with wife Aymie shifting to being a full-time housekeeper.

As the years progressed, it became evident that Rombar was right about moving to Gensan. Corn supplies were abundant that on the average, he was shipping 12 wheeler-trucks worth of the crop weekly to Luzon.

In 1996, Malacanang allowed the importation of corn from other countries causing local prices to plummet.

As Rombar recalls it, “Then South Cotabato Governor Larry de Pedro asked me not to patronize the corn imports in order to help the farmers of South Cotabato.”

Heeding the governor’s call to support his suppliers, he did not stop buying from local farmers. This however affected the company’s profit margins and with the continued onslaught of the cheaper imports, his local purchases soon dwindled.

At around the same time, Rombar received a call from an excited Kuya Efren. He wanted him to immediately look for a lot where they can build a 100-room hotel. The family wants to enter into a franchise agreement with the Days Inn International.

“I was shocked, of course,” says Rombar while recalling that he asked his brother this question: “What do we know about running a hotel, much more a hotel with 100 rooms!?”

Again, came Kuya Efren’s stock answer: “Lahat ng bagay, napag-aaralan.”

Thus, the frantic search for a suitable location began. In less than a week, they were able to purchase a 7,000 square-meter property along the National Highway right across the sprawling Gaisano Mall.

In less than two months, workers started constructing the foundation of the proposed four-storey hotel. Using pre-fabricated slabs, the latest U.S. technology marvel, the project was finished in less than a year.

Talks between Rombar’s family and the Days Inn soured however. Finally, the Bartolomes decided to handle the hotel themselves with their Gensan-based brother the obvious choice to head it.

On July 1, 1997, the 104-room East Asia Royale Hotel and Arcade finally opened with Romeo Bartolome at the helm. Under him were sixty five employees including senior managers to assist him. His number rule and maxim for them: Service with a Smile.

Being in the region for so long and having already learned the culture and lifestyles of its peoples, Rombar used this knowledge to his advantage in treating his local clientele and in conceptualizing promotional plans especially for his bars and tenants at the two-building arcade fronting the hotel.

He explains: “During the early 90s, the night life here was not that vibrant. Since Gensan is made up of an industrious working class, most of them would rather sleep after work than venture out at night. And because of the lack of better choices here, some would opt to travel to Davao for a good time. I wanted to change all that.”

Thus he initiated his first of a series of street parties and concerts featuring show bands and performing artists from Davao, Cebu and Manila revolutionizing General Santos City’s night life.

His wife Aymie also ventured into her own business by opening a franchise of Giacomino’s Pizza which she later acquired from the original owners.  This, plus taking care of her family which now includes Raphael and Roma aside from Rabmor kept her so busy too.   Currently, she operates a Medical Transcription Office as well.

Still, the young hotelier realized how volatile the hotel industry can be. A series of terror bomb attacks in the city and in nearby areas had immediate and direct repercussions on his business.

Rombar explains: “Hotels are the first casualties of any of these dastardly occurrences. As soon as news about a bomb or skirmish is leaked out on the evening news, then the ensuing cancellations of room reservations from our clients follow.”

Eventually, he changed tack and concentrated on the local regional market by pushing his hotel’s full service function rooms and restaurants while still occasionally churning out the street parties and events it was known for.

This ploy eventually worked. The hotel soon became the region’s choice venue for small and large gatherings. His catering services barely rest due to numerous functions. Ultimately, local bookings more than made up for any weakness in the entry of inbound tourists.

“Lahat ng bagay, napag-aaralan.”

Now on its 11th year and the city’s constituents more secured with the local government’s vigilant efforts to maintain a healthy climate of peace and order, Romeo Bartolome still shows no sign of stopping.

Right now, he has plans of building an extension at the corner lot adjacent to his hotel to house bigger halls for large conventions, an indoor swimming pool and another shopping arcade with a bigger parking space for planned bigger street parties.

Rombar clarifies this, thus, “I still have grand dreams for Gen. Santos. Right now, big economic players are starting to come in, showing interest in our dynamic economy propelled by a growing able workforce.”

He adds: “East Asia Royale Hotel was at the right place at the right time when it opened here. Now with even better things to come for Gensan, we sure don’t want to miss the ride.”

NDDU inaugurates 4-story IBED Building @ Lagao Campus

Posted by bariles On June - 16 - 2008 41 COMMENTS

Just in time for the opening of School Year 2008-2009, Notre Dame of Dadiangas University in Gen. Santos City recently inaugurated its four-storey Integrated Basic Education Department (the new classy name for the word” Elementary”) school building at its sprawling Lagao Campus where its High School Department is also stationed.

NDDU Lagao

Formerly located at its Highway Campus, both departments are now housed in Lagao with the College department subsequently taking over the whole campus in Dadiangas.

Interestingly, the new building, christened St. Marcellin Champagnat Hall (after the founder of the Marist Brothers) looks very much like the main building at the Dadiangas campus, with its eye-catching green stained-glass facade in the center. It will definitely be NDDU’s signature look for the years to come.

Above photograph is the left wing of the new building, while photograph at the right is the right wing facing Tiongson Street in Lagao.

Below is the marker of the new building.

To NDDU Bro. John Tan, FMS and his staff, together with the whole Marist Brothers congregation, including Provincial Supervisor Bro. Manny de Leon, FMS congratulations from Bariles Republic, alumnus of High School Batch 82!!!

110th Philippine Independence Day Celebration in GenSan

Posted by bariles On June - 15 - 2008 13 COMMENTS

HAPPY FATHER’S DAY everyone!

The invitation to last Thursday, June 12′s 110th Philippine Independence Day Celebration at the Gen. Paulino Santos Park stated that the Flag Ceremony will start at sharply 6:00 am.

Not wanting to be late, I set my clock at 5:am, prepared my polo barong (invitation says FORMAL FILIPINO ATTIRE) and black slacks and slept before 10, making sure that the TV was off. Just didn’t want to be kept awake by the latest episode of CSI.

The last time I attended a very important flag-raising ceremony for Independence Day was in 2003 when the President of the Republic Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo herself was the Guest of Honor in the Tuna Capital and was the one who hoisted the flag together with local officials and a few of her men from Manila.

That time, I forgot to set my phone alarm which made me arrive late for the ceremonies that the President’s security men did not allow me to go inside the fenced perimeter at the flagpole area. It took a while before somebody recognized me and directed them to let me in near GMA and her Cabinet plus a few dozens more of people of national prominence were huddled.

This year’s ceremony was simpler with no national figure except the Davao-based Indonesian and Japanese consuls and yet made meaningful by a moving program which required the participation of performers from various sectors.

The Choral Contingent were singers from the GSC Government Employees Choir, the GSC High School Youth Choir and the GSC DepEd Teachers’ Choir plus a young soloist, Ms. Cris Lyn Rotor. The dancers were from the nationally-acclaimed RMMC Teatro Ambahanon.

P/Superintent Arpha S. Macalangcom of the Free and Accepted Masons of the Philippines stopped everybody in their tracks with a stirring rendition of his poem (or Tula), Alay sa Watawat. I’ve never heard anyone deliver a poem with such fire and eloquence that I vowed to speak only Tagalog that day.

Later on, after a speech by GenSan City Mayor Jun Acharon, 110 doves signifying each year of our independence were released while the song, “Bayan Ko” was sung in the background.

Anyway, here are some of the pictures during the 110th Philippine Indencepence Day Celebration in General Santos City.

And yes, before I forget, the theme for this year’s celebration is “PAGLAYANG MINAMAHAL“. Host was Ms. Joana Grace Banting-Lapore for the program directed by Mr. Egai Cadiente.

GenSan peace-keeping forces from the military, police, BJMP, Traffic, Civil Security Unit, Boys and Girls Scouts of the Philippines stand in attention during the flag-raising ceremony amidst the Sydney Hotel, a business-class GenSan Hotel at the backdrop.

The Chorale Contingent from the GSC Government Employees Performing Arts Company Choral Division, GSC HS Youth Choir & GSC DepEd Teacher’s Choir. Guitarist is Cecil Gao-ay.

The flag bearers approaching the flagpole while the Choral contingent serenades everyone with their Tagalog pieces under the stare of the statue of Gen. Paulino Santos.

Gensan Mayor Pedro Acharon, Jr, First Lady Dr. Rose Achaon, Vice-Mayor Flor Congson, DepEd Supervisor Estrella Lariosa, First Batchers Rep and radio personality Tita Ampy Lacay & a lumad brother pay allegiance to the flag.

The Philippine flag nearing the top of the pole to eventually sway freely with the wind while underneath are a few hundred people looking up at her wondering why they are still imprisoned by the shackles of poverty due to the high prices of fuel, rice, education, housing and medicine and by the apathy, callousness and greed of our present national leadership.

Tuka Marine Park Adventure, Part 3

Tuka 3 Beach‘s sand has the same off-whitish, beige tint as that of Boracay and even Gumasa in Glan, although bigger and coarser in texture. For city mice like my 3 younger nieces Paula, Bea and Alanna however, this is the least of their worries as they immediately immersed in the shallower part of the shore, away from the corals, and started to build sand castles.

The whole stretch of the coastline of the cove measures about 600 meters and lies nestled at the foot of a mountain heavily covered with thick foliage and coconut trees. At opposite ends are cliffs extending into the sea and separate Tuka 3 from Tuka 2 and 4.

With lunch still being readied, I saw an opportunity to exercise and walked my way to the farthest end of the beach. There below the cliff were large black rocks which much have fallen from the mountain above, making them look like islets from a distance, jutting above the water.

I tried clambering up one of the biggest rocks and from that vantage, I realized how beautiful the whole expanse of Tuka 3 really was. I stayed there for a few more minutes until finally summoned by my nieces for the much-anticipated lunch.

After the healthy meal of grilled pork chops, matang baka (tulay) and kinilaw with my siblings, I noticed that the tide was fast coming in making for more comfortable swimming. I immediately put on my life jacket, goggles and snorkel, part of the swimming gear on loan to us by Kiamba First Lady Daday Falgui’s staff.

In no time at all, I was floating above the water, face down not quite prepared for the marvelous sight of the paradise that would greet my eyes down below.

It was literally a garden of corals before me, corals of all shapes and sizes, of amazingly different colors and hues, moving and swaying in slow motion with the undercurrents, as if performing their own underwater ballet.

Darting in and out of the corals and rocks were fish that one only sees in Walt Disney’s animated movies. There were a few I recognized- couple of clown fish, a dwarf angel fish (I FOUND NEMO!), a school of butterfly fish, a scary-looking puffer fish and I swear, a 3-foot long sea snake which nearly made me panic when it appeared to swim directly towards my direction.

If not for the big waves which have started to materialize and the warning of rains above, I would have stayed longer underwater.

Now it was time to head back home through the same fishing boat which came back for us. Trying to be responsible citizens, we carried back everything we brought into the marine park including our trash.

And why not? That was the least we can do for Tuka Marine Park considering how priceless our fun there was. Preserving her clean, uncluttered and unspoilt condition was our SMALL way of saying THANK YOU.

To get to Tuka Beach, take any of the vans waiting at the ABLOG’S TRANSPORT GROUP TERMINAL along North Osmeña Street in GenSan. A one-way fare to Kiamba will cost you P120 (used to be P90 three weeks ago). Tell the driver to drive you directly to the Kiamba wharf. There, a fishing boat will take you and your companions to Tuka 3. For my group of 10, we paid P1000 (back and forth). ACKNOWLEDGMENTS: Thanks to Kiamba First Lady Mrs. Dayday Falgui & the Calis Family.

Even from afar, Tuka 3 Beach looked so pristine with nary a beach cottage in sight. All we can see were coconut trees and groups of picnickers who were there earlier.

In a short while, our boat stopped and anchored about fifteen meters from the shore. This was our signal to disembark.

One by one, assisted by our ever-dependable boatmen, we lowered ourselves on the small steel ladder they attached at the side of the boat and jumped into the inviting waist-deep waters of Tuka below while at the same time trying to balance some of the smaller personal stuff we grasped in each arm. The rest of our heavier cargo were carried by a small banca.

Nevertheless, it was still a struggle trying to reach the shore for we were walking through a field of corals. A couple of times, my flipflops almost got trapped between the numerous small cracks and crevices along the way which made me come up with Tuka Lesson #1: Wear Beach Shoes.

Upon reaching the shore, we immediately looked for our own spot and saw a vacant concrete picnic table provided for by the Tourism office of Kiamba, right behind the Tuka Beach signage.

We then started unpacking our things and immediately after, my nieces, Claudine and Marrell began their cooking chores for their MENU of: Tuna Kinilaw, Grilled Matang Baka (or Tulay in these parts), Grilled Pork Chop, and Tomato/Cucumber Salad.

Eventually, I came up with Lesson # 2: Bring lots of drinking Water. We forgot to bring enough water to wash the food we were about to cook so had no choice but to use our drinking water and later on, scrimp on whatever was left from the two gallons we initially brought.

While waiting for the food to be cooked and after helping my brother set up his mini-tent, I decided to tour the marine park but not before reading these signs below:

The Tuka Marine Park Adventure, Part I

I have been to Tuka Beach once before in 2006, a trip I enjoyed so much that when my brother invited the whole family for a weekend there again, I was the first to say “yes”!

Tuka Beach in the municipality of Kiamba, Sarangani Province is actually the name given to a protected marine park consisting of four coves christened as Tuka 1, 2, 3 and 4.

Currently, only the first three coves are open to the public while the last one is off-limits.

On the day of what my nieces called the TUKA MARINE PARK ADVENTURE, we left Gen. Santos before 7:00 AM since staying overnite was not part of our plans and we wanted to come back home to the city before 6:00 PM.

There were 11 of us inside my brother’s INNOVA which made for a very noisy although merry ride to the municipality of Kiamba, 87 kilometers west of the Tuna Capital, along the shores of Sarangani Bay.

We arrived Kiamba an hour and a half later and proceeded straight to the wharf where Mrs. Dayday Falgui, wife of the Mayor, Rommel, a friend of my brother from way back was waiting for us.

Since Tuka is only reachable by sea, she directed us to a 20-foot long fishing boat which will take us there. But since it was low tide and the boat couldn’t get near the wharf, some of us had to be ferried by a smaller banca to the boat itself.

The rest (like me) waded in waist-deep water instead.

My huge brother Orman trying to fit into the 6-foot long banca which will take him to the fishing boat, our transport vessel to Tuka. Obviously, nobody wanted to ride with him.
Since my siblings and I were of the extra large variety, we had a hard time going up the boat and if not for the strong arms of the boatmen who helped us by pushing our heavy asses upwards, we would have fallen into the cold water below. Eventually, all were us were seated comfortably in the middle part of the vessel.

In no time at all, we were sailing our way to Tuka, past other fishing boats which berthed for the day, past small communities along the shores of Kiamba, and past majestic views of the rolling hills of Sarangani in the not too distant horizon.

We soon passed by Tuka 1 and Tuka 2 which all seem deserted and eventually, the sight of Tuka 3 was now before us.

The Junior Chamber International-Philippines, also known as the Twin Star Jaycess, is presenting the first search for the Hari ng GenSan (a male beauty and talent competition) on June 7, 2009 at 6pm at the Family Country Hotel and Convention Center.

The JCI is a worldwide federation of young leaders and entrepreneurs and GenSan Chapter officer Edison “Ember” Impang is the chairman of this project.

Admission to the pageant (is it still called pageant when it’s an all male event?) is free according to my good friend Jay-R, one of the movers behind it. They plan to make this an annual event much like the “Hari ng Negros” maybe.

80s screen goddess, Cristina Gonzales enthralls GenSan

Posted by bariles On June - 2 - 2008 8 COMMENTS

Cristina Gonzales-Romualdez has been away from showbiz for quite sometime now ever since she got hitched to former Congressman and now Tacloban City Mayor Alfred Romualdez, nephew of Imelda Marcos but she still can’t escape the gleeful shrieks of fans and admirers everywhere she goes.

Last week, the former sex siren of the 80s (now councilor of Tacloban) and her husband were at the Tuna Capital to meet up with the city officials and invite them to their Pagsangyaw Festival slated on the last two days of June.

While they were waiting for GenSan Mayor Jun Acharon at his newly-renovated office, I had the chance to engage them in small talk and inform them that my mom is also a Waray, having hailed from Guiuan, Samar. This gave me the balls later to ask permission to have my picture taken with the former sex goddess of the Philippine cinema.

At 42, Ma’am Cristina (as her staff calls her) doesn’t look a day older than the time when she was the most in-demand leading lady of action stars. Although blessed already with two kids, six-year old Sophia and 5-year old Diana, she can still give today’s sexy actresses a run for their money.

While looking at her, I couldn’t help but think that she must be the original Flawless Queen because of her milky-white complexion. With only minimal make-up, she still looked fresh despite the fact that their group just came from a city tour with the councilors.

But what made her even more striking is her calm demeanor during the ensuing conversation between her husband and Mayor Acharon which lasted almost an hour. I noticed that she was not only playing the role of a supportive and attentive mayor’s wife to the hilt but also that of a city councilor, complementing her husband’s sales spiel on the merits of their patronal fiesta next month, throwing in bits and pieces of additional info herself.

She is definitely her husband’s secret weapon!

After the courtesy call, the Tacloban couple proceeded to the city hall lobby. There, they were swarmed by camera-toting government employees who have been waiting for over an hour for a chance to catch a glimpse of one of Philippine cinema’s most beautiful faces and probably have their pictures taken with her.

At this point, the mayor of Tacloban gallantly stepped aside and gave her the spotlight. In his hometown in Tacloban, he maybe the King but elsewhere in the Philippines, including General Santos City, only his wife, Cristina matters to throngs of ordinary movie-going folks, very much like these star-strucked “generals” before them.
