(UPDATED! More pix!) Multi-million Pacquiao Bldg. in GenSan nearing completion

08/20/2008 by bariles in Landmarks with 93 Comments - 3,521 Views

Ever since GenSan’s pride and World Boxing champ Manny Pacquiao became famous, two of the most requested and must-see venues in the city among Lakbay-Aral groups from other areas are his Pacman Convenience Store along Santiago Boulevard (which has since closed shop) and his house (referred to by local residents as the “Pacquiao Mansion“) at the NLSA Road in Barangay Lagao.

Now, there’s another up and coming landmark courtesy of Pacman and this time, it’s a two-storey commercial building which is nearing completion at the corner of South Osmeña and Sampaguita Streets.

Located at a lot formerly owned by a certain Dr. Romero, it  reportedly set back Manny about P12million.   He then invested another P20million++ in the construction of the mixed-use building which has a total floor space of 1,345 sq.meters. It’s designer is Architect Rex Acdal,  one of the most sought after architects in Soccsksargen.  In fact, my brother’s house is one of his very first projects here. ;)

Other Rex Acdal‘s works are Plaza Nova (Santiago Blvd.), Chicken House (Magsaysay Avenue), Socsargen Hospital Expansion, Dumaran Shell Station (Mabuhay Road), Johnston Building (Magsaysay Avenue), Emily’s Pension House (Surallah, SoCot), Galaxy Galleria (Koronadal), and Patio Eloisa (Hicban Subdivision), among others.

Anyway, back to the champ, this new business venture of the Champ will be housing his convenience store, a restaurant, and offices including his own (about time).

Located right at the heart of the city, I am most certain that this will again turn out to be another famous TOURIST LANDMARK of Gen. Santos.

Now, I would like to post a question to everyone:

If you were to help Manny decide on what to do with his building, what do you think should it be?

Three commenters/responders with the best suggestions will each receive a BARILES REPUBLIC MUG.   Deadline of entries will be on August 31, 2008.

GO FOR IT GUYS!  :)

Morag di man propesyonal.

Ang uban building diha sa Gensan bisag unsa ra man sad mahuna hunaan ibutang wa man naga komentar pag ayo??

well, well it seems that many’s building has been getting a lot of attention… i think it’s pretty bold for the architect to do this, its just that art is relative -what may be considered art for one person, may totally be a kid’s graffiti for another, in the same way that vincent van gogh’s paintings were not so widely accepted back in his time…

so much for the flashback, let’s fast forward to the 21st century! it does look, kinda err…colorful??

okay… let’s just wait for it to finish, maybe it’s gonna look all better when its done and furnished (with the lights and all that)…

by the way, everybody wanted starbucks placed on that building, i firmly believe that coffee bean and figaro are better options, starbucks is sooo commercialized, and here in ortigas its just like 711 (meaning there’s one in almost every street!)

    ja mata ne!

I don’t see any parking area. I suggest Pacman considers building a fairly spacious parking area to attract more customers. Customers who find difficulty looking for a parking slot usually are not inclined to return. A good looking commercial center like Pacman’s should offer comfortable parking facilities to customers.

    ano daw un..

people didn’t know what is art..

that’s the architects own idea about the building..

    kakaiba nga xa ei

    hnd common ung design..

alangan nmn mang gaya xa ng ibang design..

it shows that gensan is not yet a highly urbanized city..

bcuz it reflects on how people reacts to the design.. (“manol”)

hope that pacquiao will invest more in his own city..

we should be thankful n naga invest xa d2 s gensan…

Hello guys, its only now that i was able 2 read some of ur comments regarding d new pacquiao bldg.ur comments amused me(sori,i wasnt able 2 read d others).i hope d author cud update u w/ d latest picture wherein ur concern about d parking will b answered(we have parking slots n front of d bldg). I cant put here n detail d rationale behind d design,it wil take me until morning 2 do so.but i promise, every detail has meaning & purpose.every mass, every plain & curve has intentions.d “sashimi plate” was inspired by d hull of fishing boats.those “trellised” balconies & sunshades were designed to minimise d effect of d radiant heat.the color scheme?…well, green goes well w/ earth tones…and is d favorite color of my client.how wud u feel i u see a mountain, all clay w/o a tree?…dry, monotonous, lifeless.we filipinos love color,we are hapi pipol. Watch out guys,BLUGRE CAFE is coming to town…syempre sa bldg ni pacman. Architecture is the mother of ol arts `coz its 3 dimensional & u can feel d space.it is also more art than science.for me,that bldg of pacman is ARThitecture.i hope some of u cud get inside it and feel the space. Some may not like it(they are entitled to their opinion & i respect it),but im proud to have created it…IM PROUD TO HAVE CREATED SOMETHING NEW,SOMETHING DIFFERENT!….why follow when u can be a step ahead?..GUDNYT GUYS!THANKS!

  21. hannsg11/14/2008 at 8:46 AMReply

pahabol na comment, just my own opinion so either the architect can take notice or ignore them I’ll try to give 2 sides para also fair

    Pros:
    - nice color palette but typical of jollibee like bldgs.
    - high ceiling and lots of spaces
    - seems built with durable materials
    - nice touch with focal point (sashimi holder) so its unique
    and recognizable

    Cons:
    - green color was off the color scheme (the hue not even match)
    - no unifying structural shape and design. Lines and shape was all
over the place its better than a squared boxed bldg but it could
have been better if the shapes have a unifying theme like a box
with an arch or box with a cylindrical accent
    - for its look. P20M might be too much..

I’ve travelled all over so I do have a appreciation of what looks good or not. I dont think you have to study architecture to get a feel of the current styles and designs. thats just a lame excuse and if get to hear from people about my design I’ll probably just go back to my drawing board and see how I can tweak the design. maybe a simple color change will do.

Dubai bldgs now ranks as the trendiest spot for architecture. So maybe somehow we can copy those great works or art.. we filipinos are the best copycats anyway.

  22. Jasper11/14/2008 at 12:26 PMReply

@hannsg@hannsg – A copycat? Oh no. no no.

In my opinion as an architect, the building is hideous. It’s not manny’s fault. It doesn’t reflect anything about the culture of the place, or even the owner. I wished manny should have at least asked for a design competition and picked the best design. I really couldn’t get myself to appreciate it even if the color gets changed a hundred times. And forget starbucks, they always pick their classy place, and I’m sure they won’t tarnish their image by attaching their logo on this structure. I’m sorry for being direct, but I’m pretty sure I’m not the only one who feels this way.
