(Postcript) ABS-CBN Talent Center cancels Tuna Festival show of John Lloyd Cruz, Gerald Anderson & Kim Chiu
I just arrived tonight from Davao City (which is celebrating its Kadayawan Festival) where I met up with my balikbayan friend Rey whom I have not seen since 1991. We had a few hours to catch up on the times gone by and suffice to say, we both had fun updating each other on how we’ve been.
Since I only hitched a ride with my best friend Francis, I had to leave before 5 in the afternoon and after buying a few things at SM Davao which was so packed with festival shoppers, we started our way home.
Earlier, I noticed a poster inside the mall announcing the appearance of the two lead starts of ABS-CBN‘s teleserye, “MY GIRL“, Gensan’s very own Gerald Anderson and Kim Chiu at their upper floor that very same time.

Gerald Anderson & Kim Chiu during the Bench Blackout Show
That got me into thinking how unfair ABS-CBN really is.
Yesterday, Friday, when I was preparing to blog about the upcoming shows of the artists of competing television stations ABS-CBN and GMA for the Tuna Festival, I received some discouraging news.
According to an ABS-CBN Gensan Marketing executive, the August 30 KCC Mall of GenSan show of Gerald and Kim together with John Lloyd Cruz which they have been announcing on their local TV programs, Magandang Umaga Socsargen and TV Patrol Socsargen and FM radio programs for the past two weeks has been cancelled!
The reason?
The fear of the ABS-CBN Talent Center that Gen. Santos City may not be a safe place to bring their priced stars due to the recent events in Lanao del Norte and North Cotabato.
Whaaat the f….ck!!!!!?????
I was so furious when I heard this flimsy and stupid excuse not wanting to believe that they did it again! During the last Kalilangan Festival in February, they also cancelled the supposedly appearance of the band CUESHE!
Granting that their Talent Center (headed by Mr. Johnny Manahan) has all the right to ensure the safety of their wards, why single out GenSan only?
This is an insult to the capabilities of the local security and peace-keeping forces and a mindless and insensitive message to the local government of GenSan which has been ABS-CBN’s biggest advertiser for the past five years in Region XII.
And what about GMA, the Kapuso Network?
Thank God, they’re not leaving us out in the cold and are in fact, pushing through with their Tuna Fest Kapuso Day with Regine Velasquez, Mark Anthony Fernandez, Dennis Trillo and many more. Same thing with SMART, Coca Cola, San Miguel, K101 and RMN who have also booked Manila-based artists for the Tuna Festival, including Kamikazee, among others.
That leaves ABS-CBN alone in their decision to forbid their artists to perform here, including Gerald Anderson who hails from this place and whose mother still LIVES HERE in their old house at Doña Soledad Subdivision!
Surely, something must be done about this affront not only on the local authorities but to all of us!
The comments and response section is all yours, my dear readers.
I have said my piece.
POSTSCRIPT:
Good news! ABS-CBN Talent Center must have finally heard all our collective voices and agreed that in place of John Lloyd Cruz, Kim Chiu and Gerald Anderson, they will be bringing in at the KCC Mall of GenSan on September 6, 2007 the latest Grand Prize Winner of the Pinoy Big Brother Celebrity Edition Season II – DYAAARAAAAANNNN – Davao City’s very own comic artist, MR. RUBEN GONZAGA!!!!

So, what do you have to say now, people of the Philippines????

Hi, Avel, too bad I didn’t catch you here yesterday. Anyway, ABS-CBN’s entry at the float parade this morning was really laughable. Not that GMA’s was the best, either, but at least it had star attractions. ABS-CBN? Pffft.
Funny thing: an ABS-CBN pickup was parked where I was taking pictures. Then the driver came running and repositioned the vehicle. A little while later, it took off. Why? The GMA float was about to arrive.

Hi Bariles,
Can’t blame you for being MAAAAAD.
You see, almost all people here in Manila and Luzon has that IDIOTIC impresion about Mindanao,
I have a feeling that almost all people in the media didn’t pass their geopraphy subjects, in elementary.
The’y just don’t undersatnd the terrain or neglect to explane how far these terrorist laden areas are from Davao and Gensan.
Maybe they ABS CBN jsut want to be consistent that the CES Drilon KFR was not just a DRAMA. so pati mga small time na celebrity minamagnify and security scenario.
Pardon me of my ignorance, but I don’t even know these “stars” of abs cbn are.
In Manila per se`, ABS CBN doesn’t lead surveys, it’s GMA 7 who has the lion share.
At least I know Marian Rivera but I already forgot about the Mulawin girl.
Not a lost for GSC Bariles, it’s their’s actually.
Actually, here is the real reason… their supposed to travel by air via private plane,( not the likes of plane that Manny uses) yung mga chaep ones lang, di lang sila nakapag down kasi gusto exchange deal with the carrier company.
Then and next option was to Travel by Armored Sub-Urban but di rin possible since all armored vehicles were booked for the VIP’s in the Kadayawan event.

i agree with, ya’ll… this is a sad development, and a frustrating one at that… not only to those who are looking forward to this activity; but i believe to the organizers as well, the tunafest council…
with their logistics and positioning, i would say that ABS-CBN would have the advantage when it comes to putting in artists in festivals all over the country… however, if they feel that they can just do whatever they want after so much hype, they’d rather not commit… i’m sure the city’s security council is doing its very best to make sure that we’re all safe as we enjoy the activities in the tunafest… but with this recent development, coupled by their lame excuse, who can blame if people’s brains would burst out in ire and disappointment… my hats off to GMA, and all the sponsors/entities who are pushing through with their invited guests (from Manila)… we’ve been through tougher times before… we can all get through this… lesson learned: never trust those who always fail you, and spoil the fun… i won’t blame if people will boycott the activities they’d come up with next time… with this, i’m GMA will post a firmer grip on their viewing audience in the city… there’s too much drama going on with ABS-CBN… their action is a slap in the face, and an insult to all of us… ’nuff said…
let’s continue to pray for peace…
God bless us all…

i agree it’s a bit unfair for ABS-CBN to do what they did but I think they’re merely reacting to their perception of reality which may not be true after all.
Like it or not, when you mention Mindanao, Cotabato and travel in the same vein to non-Mindanao folks, they always think that the whole of Mindanao is in a state of conflagration or somethin’.
They’re ignorant enough not to be able to distinguish there are only certain pockets in Mindanao where these skirmishes are taking place. For the longest time, it’s hard to convince medical missions from abroad to set foot in our province as they’re scared shitless about getting kidnapped and what not.
Can we totally blame them? I know, i know, it ain’t fair at all but I guess we got the work cut out for us and that is to try our darndest to change other people’s perceptions…Iyon lang..just my two cents!

Point of view lang… Hindi ko rin masisi ang Abs after what happened to Ces Drilon.. They are just taking precautions for the safety of their talents. Kung Digos nga nabomabahan which is just a 1 hour drive from Davao City. I didt say na hindi safe ang Gensan, but Gensan is near Cotabato kung saan may giyera. In Davao City, safe sila dahil sa very strict impelentation on safety measures ni Mayor Duterte.

I am sure ABS-CBN and whoever made such decision have their own valid reason. Remember, what may be valid for some may not be valid for others. I also don’t find any merit in some observation that naging unfair ang ABS-CBN coz in fact, since last year’s Kadayawan, hindi din ganun kadami ang mga talents na pinapunta nila sa Davao.
On a more personal note, I would like to say that it’s kind of disappointing to know that para din palang na balewala kung anuman yung naging role din ng ABS-CBN Gensan to promote the “Kalilangan Festival” not only nationwide, but also to the whole world. I was one of the pioneer employees of ABS-CBN Gensan and I saw the time, dedication, and the passion of the first local production team headed by Ms. Samson to promote it, under the management of it’s then station manager Ms. Dator. We even had a tv travel show that was airing to promote not only Gensan but SocSarGen as a whole. The show then went on to be aired on TFC and for the whole of Mindanao, if my memory serves me right.
But then again, everyone is entitled to his/her own opinion, so I respect everyone’s view about the matter. I hope maaayos din to in time.

Geography
Mindanao is the second largest island in the country at 94,630 square kilometers. The island is mountainous, and is home to Mount Apo, the highest mountain in the country. Mindanao is surrounded by seas: the Sulu Sea to the west, the Philippine Sea to the east, and the Celebes Sea to the south. Of all the islands of the Philippines, Mindanao shows the greatest variety of physiographic development. High, rugged, faulted mountains; almost isolated volcanic peaks; high rolling plateaus; and broad, level, swampy plains are found there.
The island group of Mindanao encompasses Mindanao island itself and the Sulu Archipelago to the southwest. The island group is divided into six regions, which are further subdivided into 25 provinces.
History
Region XI was originally called Southern Mindanao, and in addition to the three Davao provinces also included Surigao del Sur and South Cotabato. At that time, Compostela Valley was still part of Davao del Norte. Republic Act No. 7225, ratified on March 16, 1992, created the province of Sarangani from South Cotabato. Then, Republic Act No. 7901, signed on February 3, 1995, by President Fidel V. Ramos transferred Surigao del Sur into the newly created region of Caraga (Region XIII). Finally, on September 19, 2001, President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo’s Executive Order No. 36 reorganized the regions and provinces in Mindanao. This moved South Cotabato and Sarangani to SOCCSKSARGEN region and renamed Southern Mindanao as Davao Region.
This region also bears the nickname Silicon Gulf.
olitical divisions
Main article: Political Divisions of Mindanao
The island group of Mindanao is an arbitrary grouping of islands in the Southern Philippines which encompasses six administrative regions[1]. These regions are further subdivided into 25 provinces, of which only four are not on Mindanao island itself. The island group includes the Sulu Archipelago to the southwest, which consists of the major islands of Basilan, Jolo, and Tawi-Tawi, plus outlying islands in other areas such as Camiguin, Dinagat, Siargao, Samal. The Limunsudan Falls, with an approximate height of 800 ft, is the highest water falls in the Philippines located at Iligan City.
The six regions are:
* Zamboanga Peninsula (Region IX)
* Northern Mindanao (Region X)
* Davao Region (Region XI)
* SOCCSKSARGEN (Region XII)
* Caraga (Region XIII)
* Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM)
The major conurbation on Mindanao is Davao City, the country’s largest city by area, with a population of approximately 1.3 million.

Guys, in fairness to the staff of ABS-CBN Soccsksargen, let me tell you that they too were shocked and disappointed with the decision of the Manila-based Talent Center to cancel the show.
Remember that they were the ones who promoted and marketed the upcoming event for two weeks when suddenly, their Manila bosses told them to forget about it, leaving them to carry the brunt and ire of the “generals”.
The people behind ABS-CBN Socsksargen are also victims like us, their viewers, victims of their insensitive and myopic bosses in Imperial Manila who do not even care about the repercussions of what their stupid and uncalled for actions did to the sentiments of the people of GenSan.

@Mark – hindi lahat ng lumalabas sa tv newscasts accurate (examples too many to mention but to give you examples: Duterte has stated oncam several times na walang DDS, GMA declared oncam she would not run as president), yung reason na abs cbn wants to help the victims in MINDANAO, press release lang yun. Ajejeje

Hindi ka nanonood ng TV Patrol Socsksargen?
Are there concrete proofs that there are DDS? When did GMA said that she will not run as President again?. The reasons why ABS-CBN chose to cancel the show because they want to help the victims. That shows us that they have good and kind heart.

Sagot ko: Yeah, pati 24 Oras. I also read the news. Josko, saang planeta ka ba galing at naghahanap ka pa ng concrete proof on DDS at nagtatanong kung kailan sinabi ni GMA that she WOULD not run as president(and to make sure she won, nagkaroon tuloy ng “hello garci” controversy)? Ang sinasabi ko lang (in case di mo pa rin magets) mag-isip-isip muna tayo bago tayo maniwala kahit na ang info kahit yung galing pa from legitimate authorities. critical thinking tawag dyan. i-research mo sa wiki ang double talk, disinformation, red herring. read and learn. The Richard Poon show will push through. I don’t think that he is an exclusive Talent Center artist. Anyway, his show will start at 9pm (after the dinner) so you can still watch the Finals of Ms. GenSan at Gaisano Atrium which will start at 5:30 exactly. It will be a fast-paced show, according to the director, Dino. See you there jm on both events.

your mayor and govt officials should conduct medial blitz and pr jobs to deo\dorize the image of gensan, dahil kami dito sa dumaguete pag sinabing may bombang sumabog sa gensan it will register kaagad na gensan is not a sfe place to live alam nyo na ang tv coverage very subjective kaya trabaho ng opisyales nyo na pabanguhin ang imgae ng gensan, darlene should stop engaging in national politics she should concentrate on deodorizing the image of gensan para di matakot mga visitors from manila or other places and investors also

1 VS 100
As the unofficial media partner ng tuna festival, we have our limitation.
Pero kita naman diba?! andun kami during the opening of the festival.
Kahit walang recognition from the emcees that we were there. But we covered the whole show. Almost 80 percent of the workforce of ABS-CBN GenSan andoon to promote tuna fest.
Anyone is welcome to watch the full coverage of the opening last friday sa CHANNEL 28.
Sorry for the dissapointments, pero ganun din kami. We were also dissapointed. Excited din kami na makakita ng artista kaya we share the joy and announce before na they were coming. as we thought.
Im here to inform.Pls don’t single us out.
If you will check http://www.bicolmail.com, they reported na the National Cooperative Summit that is originally plan to be held here will be move in Naga City.
May travel advisory din daw sina Regine Velasques and Dennis Trillo.
Sa comment na, insensitive ang delivery ng news. address ba yun sa TV PATROL SOCSARGEN? if anyone watch the local news lately, we have been improving the program. and we will take the comment in a positive note.

well, anne, yung sinasabi nyong nanduon din kayo despite not being recognize is because your station still needs the news to be updated. kasi kung di nyo i report ang tuna fest di wala kayong news for the entire week. di ba?? so maiwan kayo walang balita ang tv patrol socsksagen. that would be very funny. TV patrol socksargen not having any feature about the tuna festival. so you need to cover the activities para meron pa rin kayong balita. Alam nyo bang kumikita kayo dahil sa NEWS? AND THE TUNA FESTIVAL IS NEWS. so yung ang pang market nyo sa mga nag papa commercisl sa inyo na sobrasobra ang charges nyo. every little line and word is worth thousands para lang maipalabas sa abs. di ba totoo yan? in fact kayo nakinabang sa tuna fest na coverage.
so stop explaining lalo lang kayo nag mumukhang trying hard. I used to be an abs cbn loyal fan pero sorry, lilipat na rin ako

i watched the kapamilya show last saturday. hindi napuno ang convention center ng kcc. kakalog-kalog talaga. mabuti na lang magagaling ang tatlong hosts (joey c., hannibal and cheenee) – they were able to enliven the first part lalo na nang nagrampahan ang anim na bading. hagalpakan kami talaga. but when they called ruben (ruben who?) and he started singing, umuwi na ako. i mean “hello” di nya talent ang pagkanta.
PAMPALUGAG-LOOB?
sorry lang but gensan deserves better treatment!
marami akong kaibigan sa local abs cbn. mga matitinong tao. masigasig. tapat. it’s a pity damay tuloy sila sa ngitngit ng taga-gensan.
forward nyo ito ke manolo lopez.

Tama na ang sisihan & comments…Nothing to compare Gensan into anywhere in the Philippines…Naga City is what a Ghost City to host…May mga NPA din doon & that place is totally nothing…Unlike in Gensan they will see a lot of place to invest because we are going fast dicreetly although there is a conflict but still we are growing progressively…Kahit wala pa yang mga media station na yan…someday sila naman ang pupunta sa atin…Hello …
