Bariles Republic greets the whole Islam world “Happy Eid’l Fitr!”

Posted by bariles On September - 30 - 2008 12 COMMENTS

I was at the Mindanao State University High School Campus in downtown GenSan early this morning just in time to greet some of my Muslim friends and Alpha Phi Omega (APO) brods and sisters who were just coming out of the gym after their morning prayers marking the end of the fasting season.

To them and to all our Muslim brothers and sisters, Selamat Hariraya, Happy Eid’l Fitr, from Bariles Republic.

Here are some of the pix I took.  Click on its image for a larger view.

Happy birthday to the biggest small bro in the world!

Posted by bariles On September - 27 - 2008 91 COMMENTS

A few hours from now, my only brother Orman will be celebrating his birthday with his closest friends, office staff and church “disciples”.

How old is he?  Let’s just say, his age is still smaller than his waistline.  :)

Before my greeting gets lost in the flurry of text messages and email wishes he sure will receive by the stroke of midnight, 28th of September 2008, allow me my dear readers and faithful subscribers to feature this little prayer which somehow, would be good for him as he faces a dilemma in his love life and showbiz career.  ;)

This is for you little brother.  May this your birthday be as meaningful as the last one when Mommy and Daddy were still here.  May you continue to be blessed and be a blessing to us, your family and to your friends.  :)

Orman's Baptism Picture at the Our Lady of Peace and Good Voyage Parish

On your day, I wish you silence…
a quiet place where time stands still
and your own inner voice is the only one that speaks.
I wish you joyful remembrance of all things good
and warm and bright, and reflective celebration
of everything you’ve been through
that brought you to today.
I wish you peaceful closure
of that which needs it,
and a letting go
of things that only your heart knows…
And at the close of your day,
I wish you vibrant dreams
of the paths you have yet to travel….
…they are many, my brother,
all deliciously unknown
and ripe with possibility.
MANY HAPPY RETURNS!!!!

I tried Royal Lounge’s “eat-all-you-can” feast and I’m coming back

Posted by bariles On September - 26 - 2008 34 COMMENTS

Royale Lounge which opened during the recent Tuna Festival is actually the newly-renovated restaurant of the East Asia Royale Hotel, known before as Kalilangan Coffee Shop.  It is the first in a series of massive expansion moves being undertaken by the 11-year old hotel.

I first went inside the place during the night of the Tuna Fest’s Foam Party at the hotel carpark after being drawn inside by the brightly lit interiors walled in by glass panels from floor to ceiling.

Tastefully designed by Architect Brix Teng, using earthy hues of brown and mocca on its furniture including its soft leather seats, the now bigger dining establishment exuded class but does not overwhelm the visitor in its sophistication because it still feels homey and welcoming.

I only took coffee with that time and did not stay long but vowed to come back soon.

I finally had the chance last Saturday upon the invitation of GenSan’s hotelier gentleman Romeo Bartolome, known to his friends as Rombar to check out their latest offering, the Royal Lounge’s Weekend Buffet Dinner.

The place was packed when my partner and I arrived around 8pm.  We found out later that the whole dinner costs only P250 while kids below ten are charged half at P125.

After finding a vacant table across the Sushi Bar beside the glass panel facing the hotel arcade, I immediately did what I had to do which was to line up for the food.

Other than the Sushi Bar, the new Royal Lounge also has a Salad Bar and a separate Fruit Bar for the diet conscious.  Of course, I feasted on the sushi first because I couldn’t resist their California Maki and Tempura.

Last stop before the Main Course, the Fruit Bar, which was truly a food carver’s masterpiece.

Then I partook a little of everything from this gastronomic feast: Beef Medallion in Brown Gravy, Squid Ball in White Sauce, Royale Fried Chicken, Pancit Canton Hong Kong Style and the star of the night, the Barbecued Pork Ribs.

Everything was delightful especially the Squid Roll which was a new discovery I would consider making part of my “must-eat” list. The tangy white sauce dip was a good complement to each lightly breaded slice.

But being a pork person, I fell in love with the barbecued ribs which were glazed with Royale Lounge’s secret barbecue sauce (peppered with yellow corn) that I didn’t mind licking with my fingers.   Each grilled cubed serving was so tender and succulent.  If there was a dish here that I would recommend to my friends, this would surely be it.

I wouldn’t know if Royale Lounge would continue to serve their Barbecued Pork Ribs during their Buffet weekends or will make it part of their regular menu, but I strongly suggest that they do.  It is one thing that would make the generals come back again and again, buffet weekends or not

Royale Lounge Weekend Dinner Buffet is available every Friday and Saturday evening at the East Asia Royale Hotel, National Highway, Gen. Santos City at P250 per adult and P125 per child below 10 years old.  For reservations, contact (63) (83)553-4119 to 28.

Junk Food from my childhood: Ampao and Pop Rice

Posted by bariles On September - 24 - 2008 40 COMMENTS

I was at the KCC Mall of GenSan supermarket yesterday, doing my grocery when I came upon some familiar chichiria or what people now call as “junk food”.

These are the home made pinoy snacks, AMPAO and POP RICE, two of my favorite snack foods during my youth which I could easily buy at the neighborhood sari-sari store.

Presenting the cebuano delicacy, AMPAO, which look like these:

and these:

I remember an ampao costing 2 pieces for P0.10 before.  When I checked the price at KCC, 10 pieces now cost P15++.

Biting into a a crunchy caramelized piece made me recall that it used to be one of my comfort foods.  I used to eat so much of it that I usually had no appetite for lunch or dinner afterwards.

Now, the multi-colored POP RICE.

Actually called PUFFED RICE in English, It looks like these, packed inside small thin plastic wrappers, each one with a rubber band tied to its end…

..and upon closer look, they look like these:

Now costing P1.20 per bundle, I tried putting a handful of these pinoy version of Rice Crispies into my mouth and again, pleasant memories came rushing back to those days when we kids eat anything offered by the friendly vendor, not worrying if they have melamine, or MSG or if they have too much salt, too much fat, too much oil, too much cholesterol, too much sugar, or no nutritional value whatsoever, etcetera, etcetera, etcetera.

Back then food was food for kids like us, and there was no such thing as junk.  :)

How about you?

What were the comfort food during much of your childhood?

GenSan City Hall sets up Traffic Lights System at 2 HiWay Junctions

Posted by bariles On September - 21 - 2008 64 COMMENTS

I was on my way to the Netopia Internet Cafe at the Gaisano Mall of GenSan when I chanced upon this mini billboard at the junction of the National Highway and Santiago Boulevard.

The signboard announces the start of the installation of the “Traffic Signal System with Intersection Configuration” at two of the city’s choke points: the National Highway-Santiago Boulevard Junction and the National Highway-Jose Catolico Avenue Junction.

The project supposedly started on August 9, 2008 and will end on January 15, 2009, just in time before the Robinsons Mall along J. Catolico nears its completion and before the SM GenSan at the Santiago Blvd. commences their construction.

The billboard further names the contractor as Gosset Builders, Inc. and prices the whole project at P18,435,998.31.

Yessirree!!!!  Those two junctions are where the most number of traffic accidents occur in the Tuna Capital.  Especially during rush hours, they both turn into bottlenecks… especially with the absence of traffic boys at those crucial times.

I just hope that the riding public learn to embrace these two major developments the same way they accepted the first traffic system along the Pioneer Avenue.

Now, if you were to decide, where would you suggest the next traffic lights should be installed?  Write your choices below.

  • National Highway – Pendatun Avenue Junction
  • National Highway – Roxas Avenue Junction
  • National Highway – Bulaong Road Junction
  • National Highway – Mindanao Polytechnic Junction
  • (Name your own choice of streets.)

We will try to collate the data we gather here and maybe, just maybe, show it to Mayor Jun Acharon himself.  What do you think, dear readers?

ABS-CBN Regional Network Group co-presents MBS2!

Posted by bariles On September - 20 - 2008 31 COMMENTS

Heart pounding, hands shaking but with a smile plastered on his face, on the afternoon of September 19, 2008, Bariles Republic finally signed the Letter of Agreement designating the ABS-CBN Regional Network Group as a CO-PRESENTER of the 2nd Mindanao Bloggers Summit. Signing in for the Kapamilya station was ABS-CBN GenSan Admin Officer Myra Muñoz-Barrientos, subbing for Station Manager Annie Solon-Gacayan.

Bariles, showing off the signed Letter of Agreement with ABS-CBN RNG Admin Officer Myra Muñoz-Barrientos while behind them are MOR 92.7 dj’s Joey C and Mario Valentino

Standing as witnesses were MOR Deejays Joey Concepcion and Mario Valentino, while Field Reporter Francis Canlas took the photo seen on this post.

The short signing session which was conducted at the office of Ms. Annie at the ABS-CBN Compound in Purok Malakas was later shown the following day, Friday on the local news program, TV Patrol Socsksargen anchored by Dexter Ganibe and will be replayed on Monday morning (September 22nd) at 6:30am during the broadcast of Magandang Umaga Socsksargen.

This partnership is a big boost for the MBS2 since a 15-seconder Advertisement for the summit will be aired at ABS-CBN’s Regional Stations not only in Socsksargen but also in the major cities of Mindanao like Davao, Cagayan de Oro, and Zamboanga! It will commence on September 29 and end on October 24, 2008.

Likewise, since an event of this magnitude gathering bloggers together in what is normally known outside as “The West’s Travel Advisory Favorite” comes far in between, it may be also carried by their ANC News Channel, Studio 23, and TFC.

Haneps! What’s good about teaming up with the world’s largest Filipino-owned media conglomerate is the fact that will it not only boost the 2nd Mindanao Bloggers Summit but also the popularity of blogs and bloggers everywhere.

And of course, my deejay friends at MOR 92.7 (which is now the #1 Radio Station in GenSan, according to the latest Nielsen ratings survey), have been mentioning this event every now and then. Thanks Joey C, Mario Valentino, DJ Cheenee, Papi Churlz, and GenSan’s radio darling Inday Baki!

Lastly, allow me to thank the following people, whom without their help, the MBS2 would not have come this far:

  • Mr. Jerry Bennett, OIC of the ABS-CBN Regional Network Group
  • Ms. Annie Gacayan, Station Manager of ABS-CBN RNG Socsksargen
  • Ms. Myra Muñoz-Barrientos, Admin Officer of ABS-CBN RNG Socsksargen
  • Ms. Faye Gutierrez, RNG Manila
  • Ms. Deng Fuentes, RNG Davao
  • Ms. Myrvic Kapunan, News Chief, ABS-CBN RNG Socsksargen
  • Mr. Dexter Ganibe, ABS-CBN Socsksargen News Anchor and his field reporters and news team
  • Mr. German Pablico, ABS-CBN Socsksargen Account Executive

If you want to see the whole September 19 news broadcast, just CLICK HERE. The MBS2 news clip comes out three quarters near the end.

IF YOU WANT TO JOIN THE MBS 2 FOR FREE, JUST LEAVE A NOTE DOWN BELOW AND WE WILL GET BACK TO YOU SHORTLY.

Granddaughter of Gen. Paulino Santos is WNCAA’s tallest basketball player

Posted by bariles On September - 19 - 2008 19 COMMENTS

Cassandra Alicia C. Santos may only be all of 16 years but she has already been causing a stir in the playoffs for the Women’s National Collegiate Athletic Association (WNCAA).

A 4th year high school student of the San Beda College Alabang where she is a member of the school’s girls basketball team, Cassandra who stands 5 feet and 9.5 inches tall is their tallest player!

This is of no surprise actually because she is a great granddaughter of Gen. Paulino Santos, who himself stands more than six feet tall.

Cassandara’s father Joel, who is a former Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) player for PRESTO and who now owns one of GenSan’s largest tuna processing firms, the Sta. Cruz Seafoods (one of the sponsors of the MBS2) inside the Gen. Santos Fishport Development Complex is 6’3″ tall.  Her mother Patricia, a former flight stewardess is 5’8″!

That also makes her 3 siblings, a brother and two younger sisters taller than most young people their age.

Maybe because of her height, Cassandra has always wanted to play basketball even when she was just a student at the NDDU from Kindergarten to Grade IV and later transferred to the Quantum Academy in  Barangay San Isidro when she reached Grade V.

At Quantum, she honed not only her academic skills but also her prowess in playing basketball.

Her parents noticing that she could really excel in the sport, decided to enroll her at the San Beda College Alabang when she was a 3rd year high school student because that school has its own junior girls basketball team which they field at the Women’s National Collegiate Athletic Assosciation.

This year, she finally was able to play for the WNCAA’s 39th season where she awed the spectators not only with her towering presence but also with her fastbreaks and dunks.

The young athlete has finally realized her dream and is forever thankful that she has very supportive parents who gave her a chance to study in Manila and pursue it.  She’s dedicating all her achievements to them and to the city that her great granddaddy founded.

Cassandra C. Santos. The 1st WNCAA Varsity Player from GenSan. Another awesome General.

Watch out for more of her soon!

Bariles Republic votes for Batang Yagit at the Philippine Blog Awards

Posted by bariles On September - 18 - 2008 10 COMMENTS

For this post, not only am I re-introducing the person who redesigned this blog for me but also casting my vote for his blog in the “Bloggers Choice” category of the Philippine Blog Awards for 2008.

The guy is Winston Almendras.

The blog is Batang Yagit.

It’s very easy to come up with reasons why I chose Winston’s blog.

First, aesthetics wise, it looks good. It has less clutter than most blogs I’ve come up with and is not an eye-sore.  It doesn’t cry out for attention and yet in a sublime manner, demands to be read.

2nd, the blog itself is a multi-faceted undertaking of the author, dealing with a variety of topics from the latest techie gadgets to the newest blockbuster movie;  from his musings on that last jeepney ride to his latest resto finds – which interestingly enough, are good reads even to the most jaded viewer.

3rd, it is owned by a fellow Mindanao blogger who belongs to a Davao-based group, The Usual Suspects, who undeniably has done a lot to promote blogging not only in these parts of the country but throughout the whole archipelago by virtue of their spearheading of the two largest blogger eyeballs ever, the Mindanao Bloggers Summit and the Wordcamp 2008.

Thus, if Winston’s blog makes it as Blogger’s Choice Awardee for the Philippine Blog Awards 2008, he is not winning only for himself, not only for the TUS,  but for ALL OF US us Mindanao Bloggers.

Simply put, a vote for Winston’s Batang Yagit is a vote for Mindanao bloggers. :)

Mabuhay ang Batang Yagit!

ShoeMart GenSan’s Future Site?

Posted by bariles On September - 17 - 2008 50 COMMENTS

Bariles Republic has been receiving a lot of queries with regard to the entry of SM Supermalls in the Tuna Capital after we came out with a post on Robinsons GenSan last June 20, 2008.

A lot of speculations have sprung up and so far, there is no definite word yet on the real score.

But for the good news!

Yes, it is true that the representatives of Henry Sy, owner of SM have been talking with the family who owns the land where they want to set up SM CITY-GenSan.

Furthermore, according to my reliable source, SM only wants to lease the lot for 50 years and not to purchase it.

The next question then should be – when are both sides going for the signing of the Lease Agreement so that construction could start very soon?

My lips are sealed for now but for those who want to find out the exact location of this lot, here is a map furnished to me by Jing Velos and edited for this post’s purpose by Jay-Mar Monjas.

DFA Consular Office to open in Gen. Santos City

Posted by bariles On September - 16 - 2008 37 COMMENTS

In her Executive Order 748 which she signed on August 28, 2008, President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo ordered the opening of six more regional consular branches of the Department of Foreign Affairs.

These include the cities of Butuan, Cagayan de Oro, Bacolod, Puerto Princesa, Baguio and GENERAL SANTOS CITY!!!

Yes! You read it right.

A passporting office will be opening soon at the Tuna Capital!

Now the “generals” and the people of Socsargen won’t have to travel to Davao City anymore for their passport needs or wait for the DFA Davao people for their quarterly mobile passporting services in the city halls of GenSan or Koronadal or the provincial halls of Sarangani and Sultan Kudarat.

According to City Tourism Officer Cora Tito, every time that the mobile passporting services are conducted in GenSan, an average of 1,500 applications are received and processed at the city hall.  That just goes to show the increasing number of people wanting to leave for abroad, either to seek for greener pastures or for just simple sight-seeing trip because of the low fares introduced by budget airlines.

A star-studded Bodyfest 2008 Finals

Posted by bariles On September - 15 - 2008 16 COMMENTS

Bariles Republic noticed that the Bodyfest Search for Models Competition held back to back with the FISHDANCE Competition – Mindanao Showdown during the 10th Tuna Festival was one of the most succesful events during the week-long celebration of the 40th Anniversary of Gen. Santos City’s Charterhood.

The crowd practically took over the whole of the Gaisano Mall of GenSan Atrium and the viewing decks at the 2nd floor.

It was also star-studded in the sense that former PBA player and now Ginebra coach Allan Caidic was there together with Olympian and movie actor Monsour del Rosario as judges.

Seen having fun during the fast-paced show megged by Director Dino Veloso were City Councilor Richard Atendido (who gamely agreed to be the guinea pig for the demo of Fusion Excel, one of the sponsors) and his preggy wife Narly, former Councilor Minda Atendido, Assistant City Administrator Glennville Gonzalez, GSCCCII Executive Director Pilar Afuang, Asia United Bank exec Dave Areglado, Zion Travel and Tours GM Francis Sablon.

Fusion-Excel’s Atty. Kenneth Lee, Mayor Jun Acharon, and Mrs. Kimberly Villanueva-Lee

Bariles Republic also spotted Tunafest Director Bebot Haw, City Mayor Jun Acharon who was seated between Fusion Excel’s Atty. Kenneth Lee & his lovely wife & GenSan beauty, Kimberly Villanueva (who planed in from Kuala Lumpur 2 days earlier),  Ms. Gensan 2006 & ABS-CBN host Rhean Acosta, Fashion Designer Association of the Philippines president Johnny Abad, and Manila-based dance & hip-hop artist Oliver Neil Busier.

Bariles Republic also took note of the Gaisano Mall management staff who were there to make sure that everything goes smooth.  Kudos to them!

The whole gang of the General Santos City Camera Club was also in full force.

Hosting the show were Kapamilya deejays Mario Valentino, Cheenee and Katrina who did a “cool” dance number at the start of the show.

Just the same, the Kapuso Team from Davao City was also there to cover the event.

In the end, the following models with bodies to die for were proclaimed as winners:

  • Dicovery Models: Marisa Mae Laura and Jeffthie John Cariño

  • Ramp Models: Naiza Balindo and Ronald Colon

  • Bodyfest Champions: Joelden Gellor and Micheal Crisostomo

Here are the rest of the photos Bariles Republic took.  You may click on each one for a larger view.

Poster of 2nd Mindanao Bloggers Summit

In an email to Bariles Republic last week, Nokia Corporate Communications Manager Nikka Singson-Abes confirmed their participation in the biggest gathering of bloggers in this island scheduled on October 25, 2008!

I met Ms. Nikka at the opening of the first Nokia Store in South Central Mindanao at the KCC Mall of GenSan last month.  She allowed me to meet and interview their gracious and kind General Manager William Hamilton-Whyte.

Their participation in the MBS2 is clear proof that they are committed  more than ever in  making their presence felt in these parts of the Philippines and cement their reputation as the country’s #1 cellphone manufacturer.  Thanks NOKIA!

That’s one more sponsor, thanks to the Soccsksargen Convenors Collective who is spearheading the hosting of the Summit under the umbrella of the Mindanao Bloggers.

Last year, the 1st MBS was conducted in Davao City, courtesy of The Usual Suspects group of blog guru Oliver Robillo, a co-awardee in the Most Influential Emerging Blogs of 2008.

They are also behind the very first and mega-successful WORDCAMPs in Southeast Asia held the other week in Davao and Manila and are also assisting the GenSan Team in the MBS2.

The MBS2 is an official event of the Gensan E-Business Week and is open to  all Mindanaoan bloggers, young and old who have blogs (web logs or web journals) hosted by any of the following  web publishing plaftorms and systems and social networking groups with blogging capabilities:  WordPress, Blogger (or Blogspot), Live Journal, Multiply, Friendster Blogs, i.ph, among others.

Attendance is FREE OF CHARGE.

FOR INTERESTED PARTICIPANTS, READ ON…

If you want to join in whether as a participant or as a sponsor, please leave a message below and we will email you the requirements for inclusion.

We are targetting not more than 100 bloggers and since this is FREE, please write your intention to join as early as today.

More updates here soon!

The poster above was designed by Ryann Elumba, a Zamboanga-based artist and our Convenvors Collective rep in Zambo Peninsula.  Nice no?  :)

(updated)Has anyone ever seen a Dadiangas Tree?

Posted by bariles On September - 12 - 2008 45 COMMENTS

Has anybody among you ever seen a Dadiangas Tree, the plant from which Gen. Santos City was used to be named after?

I have.  And that was just over a year ago when someone told me that one can be found near the flagpole of the Gen. Santos Park across the city hall building.  I lost no time in looking for the elusive plant and upon locating it, found out a few things.

First, I discovered that Dadiangas is not actually a tree but a shrub, a very thorny shrub.  Second, it has  little yellow flowers and small marble-size fruits.

When General Paulino Santos arrived here in 1939 along with the first batch of settlers from Luzon, all they can see were hectares and hectares of arable land all ready to be cultivated and planted.

And of course, as the story goes, they also found out that there were a lot of these Dadiangas shrubs dotting the prairie that they decided to name it after the place.

Now, there’s just this lone Dadiangas shrub at the Gen. Santos Park which has been fenced off to protect it from peeing men and animals.  It stands about 8 feet tall but you would hardly notice it because it looks like a very ordinary plant.

According to some, a few Dadiangas trees can still be found at the farms at the city’s rural barangays, mostly at the pasture leased areas.

Now, only a few people call the city founded 60 years ago as Dadiangas, preferring to call it by its modern name, GENSAN.  The four downtown barangays of the city however are called Barangay Dadiangas South, Dadiangas North, Dadiangas East and Dadiangas West.

I just wish that the local government or some private group put a distinct marker near the surviving Dadiangas tree at the Gen. Paulino Santos Park so that the “generals” and visitors will easily discover for themselves this lowly-looking and thorny but historical plant from which their beloved city was first named after.   Am pretty sure it will be their first time to do so.

How about you?  Have you ever seen a Dadiangas shrub?

This is good news to all the readers of BARILES REPUBLIC!

A BLOG SEMINAR will be conducted in GenSan for those among you who would want to put up their own blogs just like this one.

If you have been living under Mt. Matutum for quite some time, a BLOG is actually a PERSONAL WEBSITE, but unlike websites, blogs are updated on a regular basis, are interactive (because they allow comments from readers) and can be fed to subscribers either via email or via RSS readers.

Anyway, you will learn more about it sometime in one of the weekends in November 2008 if you could come to the Notre Dame of Dadiangas University Auditorium for this event dubbed as Blog2: Blogging and Social Entrepreneurship.

Why Blog2? Because Blog1 was held last February 2008 at the Notre Dame of Marbel University.

This one will be hosted by the NDDU VOICE and is spearheaded by the Soccsksargen Convenors Collective, the same people behind the upcoming 2nd Mindanao Bloggers Summit on October 25-26, 2008, also to be held in Gen. Santos City.

Watch out for Bariles because he will be one of the speakers!

The Many Faces of Manny Pacquiao (Pacquiao Funny Pictures)

Posted by bariles On September - 11 - 2008 37 COMMENTS

Ever since Manny Pacquiao hit it big in the world of boxing, a lot of his tweaked photos appeared on the internet and circulated via email.   Most were downright funny, especially when it also involves his coach-trainer Freddie Roach.  Some are so corny that I immediately key in the DELETE button.

I still have no idea how GenSan’s hometown hero takes all these Pacquiao funny pictures but I hope that he considers these as part and parcel of fame and takes it in stride.

Here are some of the latest finds from my INBOX, a sampling of the Pinoy’s brand of humor.

WHICH ONE OF THESE PACQUIAO FUNNY PICTURES DO YOU LIKE BEST, DEAR PACMAN FANS?

You may click on each funny Pacquiao photo for a larger view.

Thanks to all the unnamed artists of these Pacquiao funny pictures, thanks.

GenSan’s Tuna Floats Now and the Floats of the 60s

Posted by bariles On September - 10 - 2008 19 COMMENTS

Bariles Republic was amazed at the entries to the recent Tuna Float Contest held during the culmination of the 10th Tuna Festival last September 5th, 2008.  Companies from the fishing, academic, private sectors tried to outdo each other in terms of coming up with the float that best represents their take on the festival theme which was: A Decade of FISHtivities and OpporTUNAties.

Here then are the non-winning but equally notable entries.  You may click on each image for a larger view.

But did you know that Float Parades in GenSan did not only occur during the onset of the Tuna Festival? During the 60s and up to the 70s each Civic Military Parade also comes with FLOATS courtesy of a civic organization, a school or just about anybody.

Here are two samples from the BAUL of my late mother.

This float with a paper-mache lion up front belongs to the Mt. Matutum Lions Club with seven lovely Lionesses (wives of Lions) in their yellow gowns. My mother is the one directly behind the man trying to raise the banderitas strung up across the streets. (Click on this photo to enlarge it.)

The Lioness at the center is the prettiest,  Tita Elsie Golingan. The rest of the ladies I recognize are Mrs. Chayong Enojado (SLN, owner of Matutum Hotel), Tita Rose Malayang, and Tita Sonia Yumang, (SLN, wife of then City Engineer).

This float belongs to what was then the Notre Dame of Dadiangas Girls Department in Beatiles Street, now known as Notre Dame of Gen. Santos City (in Barangay San Isidro). Click on this photo to enlarge it.

This was taken in 1969 when I was in Kindergarten. I should know because that’s me, the little Bariles in Barong Tagalog up there as consort of the Princess, the late Marilou Onorio, one of the many times we were paired in events like this one.

One of the other girls in front of the float (extreme left), a mestiza wearing her Damean uniform is Councilor Meggie Santos, who was then in Grade 1. Now you already know our ages!!!! :)

The building at the back is the old structure presently still standing beside Sarangani Rural Bank along the junction of Pioneer Avenue and Morrow Boulevard (now Pedro Acharon Boulevard).  Check out how it looks now in this picture below.

The old buidling beside MLhuillier as it looks now with its rusty roof.

Amazing lessons in history, right?  Who could have owned that building then and who owns it now?

More HISTORY LESSONS like this coming up, only here at BARILES REPUBLIC’S GenSan News Online Mag.

(PG-13) The night temperatures rose in GenSan

Posted by bariles On September - 8 - 2008 26 COMMENTS

The Viva Hotbabes Live in the Flesh show at the KCC Mall Convention and Events Center last month was a purely male affair, judging from the crowd I saw inside.

The average age of these men could have been at 38-48 years, presumably the same ages of the uncles and the lolo’s of Jennifer Lee, Andrea del Rosario, Maui Taylor and Katya Santos.

The cavernous convention hall was not even 1/8 full (owing to the prohibitive prices of the tickets) so you could just imagine how cold the airconditioning was for the impatient and small audience (it was supposed to start at 7pm).

Still, when the lights dimmed signalling the start of the concert and the appearance of the sexy girls singing their hit song, Bulaklak, the mood changed and temperatures rose.

One by one, Jennifer, Andrea, Katya and Maui strutted their stuff onstage, with each outfit change getting skimpier and skimpier.  The “generals” in the audience couldn’t have been happier.

Even more ecstatic were the lucky bunch of men who were called onstage and had the balls to jam with the girls.  First appearing to be shy, these “generals” eventually learned to let go of their inhibitions when their lady partners started giving them chores that made each warm-bloodied male in the audience wish that they were the ones up there with the Viva Hotbabes.

I had to give it to the four girls for being so nonchalant each time the men’s hands stray away.  They just jokingly warded off any deliberate aggressive move from their partners without embarrassing them.

Now, if that’s not professionalism,  I don’t know what else to call it then. ;)

And as my promise to everyone, especially to the Men of GenSan, here are the four goddesses of Pinoy Showbiz taken during the night they heated up the Tuna Capital of the Philippines.  YOU MAY CLICK ON EACH PHOTO FOR A LARGER IMAGE.

Sorry guys! I can not publish other pictures of the FINALE ACT of the 4 ladies (just like photo #15 of Andrea) because they’re really too sexy for this blog.

But if you want to receive them by email, I will gladly send them to you with one condition - SUBSCRIBE TO MY BLOG WITH YOUR EMAIL ADDRESS. Look at the SUBSCRIBE BOX at the Upper Right Column of this page and just write your email address there. Follow the simple instructions afterwards.

I will be sending the rest of the pictures to you taken on the night the men of GenSan developed FEVER!

Promise.
