Happy 10th Tuna Festival generals!!!! :)
Today, September 5, 2008 marks the 40th Anniversary of the charterhood of General Santos City. It also serves as the culmination of the week-long !0th Tuna Festival which honors the industry that has placed this city of over a million people in the map.
Indeed, despite its young age, GenSan has achieved more than what any other city on the same league has. Three times it was hailed as MOST COMPETITIVE MID-SIZED CITY, Cleanest City in the Philippines, and a lot more. It has also been known as the Wellspring of Winners having produced sons and daughters who have gained prominence all over the country and all over the world in their own fields of endeavor. As the DTI 12 slogan says, “Galing ng Gensan, Galing ng Gensan”.
Let me then leave everyone with these few pictures I took this morning at the opening of the activities for the culmination of the 10th Tuna Festival. It’s Bariles Republic’s way of saying, “HAPPY 10THE TUNA FESTIVAL EVERYONE!”.
Mabuhay ang mga generals!

Bariles is a Filipino word for “Tuna”, the primary source of income of the people of General Santos City which hosts 6 of the Philippines’ 8 tuna canneries and more than 80% of its tuna processing plants.

Ola!
Congrats are in order for the men and women behind the tuna festival who braved the scorching heat and pouring rains that attended the celebration.
However, there are disturbing phrases and remarks oft repeated during the last few years of tunafest as well as kalilangan celebrations. And this collective identification of residents of the city as “generals” is I suppose the most stupid thing to come out in this part of the world.
The word “general” in reference to residents here bespeaks of sore lack of history and of our local leaders who appear to relish the description.
It also betray the colonial mentality of whoever coined the word and exposed the conquistador character of those who took advantage of the so-called resettlement policy of past Philippine governmnets.
Perhaps it is time to review the city’s past and critically study the man from whose name this place was named after.
This is not to antagonize the heirs of the late General Paulino Santos whose sons and daughters, grandchildren and great grand children have lived lives worthy of emulating.
But what role exactly did the general played during the Japanese occupation period and how did he conduct himself in bringing the settlers here and opened this part of the then undivided Cotabato empire.
For the sake of the memory of the late general, please stop naming residents here as one.

HAPPY CHARTER ANNIVERSARY, GENSAN!
