GenSan’s Tuna Festival wins 2nd Best Festival in the country, and more!
Last weekend, in a jampacked ceremony at the Kalantiao Hall, Sarabia Manor Hotel in Iloilo City, the Association of Tourism Officers of the Philippines (ATOP) awarded General Santos City’s TUNA FESTIVAL as the country’s 2nd Best Tourism Event – Chartered City Category.
Receiving the award from Tourism Secretary Joseph Ace Durano for GenSan Mayor Jun Acharon were the powerhouse GenSan Team headed by Councilors Richard Atendido (Tourism Committee Chair) and Domdom Lagare together with GSC Tourism Council Vice-Chair Rey Billena, Kalilangan Festival Director Orman Manansala, CEMCDO OIC Coralyn Espinosa, CEMCDO Assistant Department Head Egai Cadiente, GSC Tourism Association Prexy Kring Macion, Architect Michael Ang, City Tourism Officer Cora Tito and Ms. GenSan 2008 Ms. Ivy Cunanan with her court.
Iloilo’s Dinagyang Festival, for the 3rd straight year again topped the competition.
The awarding was held during the culmination program of the 9th National Convention of the ATOP. This year’s gathering drew in more than 500 delegates.
Incidentally, GenSan also won the 2nd Best Tourism Week Celebration Award and the right to host next year’s 10th National Convention of the ATOP.
From Bariles Republic, congratulations to all the people behind the city’s tourism-related activities especially City Mayor Jun Acharon who has been steadfast in making each year’s celebrations grander and more festive and Tuna Festival Director Bebot Haw in his untiring efforts to strengthen the presence of this annual celebration of the city’s charterhood in the tourism map.

@anonymouse
– ang tunafest ay pinamumunuan ng tuna festival council – ang gsc chamber of commerce ang nasa likod ng TFC. taon-taon, at least four months before the tunafest, nagmimiting na sila para planuhin ang celebration…. kasama sa miting ang lahat ng mga stakeholders for the festival. yung mga interesadong sumali bilang volunteer can contact the chamber of commerce (301-7887 or 554-6108). yung mga nais isali ang event nila among the official activities may also submit their proposals to the chamber.

@sandy – very rigid ang criteria. we had to submit a fully documented report about the festival. this includes pictures, videos and writes-up. madugo ang ginagawang discussion ng mga jurors. hopefully next year, isasali na din namin ang kalilangan, yaman gensan at pasko sa gensan….

i agree… we could enjoin our fellow generals from all over the world to come home with their friends of other nationalities to join us in our celebrations; tunafest and kalilangan… tignan natin kung sino ang number next year… it would be a challenge to the organizers, and to all of us… but it’s one worth taking… cheers!!!

Kuyavel, recognition is also due to the people behind the creation of the entry document. Kuya Orman was right, that it was a tedious job for the judges. But the real challenge was to construct a documentation that will impress the judges.

Way to go GENSAN!!!!
It’s about time people sit up and recognize the efforts the people behind these festivals have given. I have personally seen their dedication, commitment and hard work in making General Santos known to the rest of the country and inspite of all the negative publicity and rumors they still persevered. That’s the GENERAL spirit!!!
Kudos to everyone!!!
I certainly hope I can come home soon and celebrate with all the Generals (I do miss being a part of the Kalilangan and Tuna Festivals – though I think I’m too old to do what I was doing back then… hehehe)
Looking forward to Gensan reaping more awards in the future!!!
