Robinsons Place GenSan to open September 2009 (updated)

Posted by bariles On March - 6 - 2009 - Visited 4816 times, 3 so far today

Bariles had the good fortune of entering the 8-hectare property of the Gokongwei’s along the Lagao National Highway two weeks ago when the group of Engineer Mark Reyes from the City Engineer’s Office conducted a meeting with the contractors inside their makeshift office to discuss matters pertaining to the construction of the upcoming GenSan Mall, Robinsons Place General Santos.

OIC City Engineer Mark Reyes (in red) in a meeting with the engineers of Robinsons Land Corporation to discuss drainage and other concerns.  Together with him are his staff Engrs. Ronel Cartojano, and Mylene Gecosala, Chief of Staff of the City Mayor’s Office Ernie Quisay and Engr. Marilou Tan.

From that meeting, I learned that barring any unforeseen circumstance beyond control, the Robinsons Place GenSan has been scheduled to open September 2009,  which is less than four months away.    I almost fell off my seat upon learning that, so excited at the prospect of watching movies in a whole new setting and doing window shopping in a completely different surrounding.

The main activity area

And judging from their 24/7 non-stop work on the mall, they will surely open on schedule.

Here are the photos of ongoing construction of the Robinsons Place General Santos, for your viewing pleasure….

Are we still part of Region XI? I know prerogative ng Robinsons Management yan pero dapat may consideration sila dahil dito sa Gensan ang location. Our City Gov’t would surely benefit in terms of additional income sa City coz of the influx of the applicants from different parts of Mindanao.

Don’t you think It’s about time to stay away from the shadow of Region XI at ipakita natin na we are capable and dependable Region XII

hinay hinay lang sa traffic lights. the priority is the main thoroughfares lalo na with out road networks. at di basta basta ang budget po. and i dont think lahat ng streets e okay na lagyan. we also have to be practical. besides, Generals should also be disciplined. and daming mga matitigas ang ulo. simple traffic rules, walang paki. Soon, kahit di pa tapos ang traffic lights, we’ll see more visible traffic enforcers at di na nagtatago sa tabi…hehehe

Posted on March 13th, 2009 at 1:16 PM

  42. Toinks Says:

@Jets, KCC will still be here. The Generals will always patronize homegrown businesses. :-) As for starbucks, i think we should stop using Davao as a standard for developments in Gensan (na dapat meron muna sa Davao before we can have the same here). Let’s focus on what we can develop here in our own turf instead.

  46. jets Says:

@gilbertyaptan – very well said, sir. (it’s the first time i heard of that rationale of the transfer. hehe)

and anyway, starbucks is not the basis for development at all. it’s even better if the Generals will start their own businesses (like the newly-opened Generals Brew, right? and to mention Kuya Chito’s Takuyaki, which is really popular here in Manila).

Though there are a lot there, we dont have here but this doesn’t mean, we can not progress on our own :) or dapat ba mauna sila bago tayo dahil they are Metro, bigger…etc… Go Gensan! Go Region 12 :)

I think this one is bigger than the one they are constructing in Davao. Had the chance to visit your place for two days. We stayed at Isla Parilla and Family Country Hotel because they have swimming pools. Can you recommend other hotels and resorts that have a pool? How about a Chinese restaurant? Is the city really safe? We’ve been hearing a lot about bombings in your city that is why I was first hesitant to go. But I had no choice. I have an important matter to attend in your city. Surprisingly, I had a great time with my family.

gensan is “more than meets the eye”. I think people’s insight about our city is quite far from what they are supposed to say. anyway, let’s be optimistic.

Gensan is not an unsafe place. Just because of bombing incidents which took place years ago, travellers labeled this city as “UNSAFE”. Think about it. The city’s prospering, just in case you guys don’t know.

That’s why we blog to eradicate those false thoughts. Why speak, just visit beloved Gensan to prove your insight.

Anyway, let’s spread peace and love here. Much love.

  55. bakunawa Says:

@Yvon Thea: IMHO, i think it would be great if you could give Gensan a chance to express its beauty and grandeur, not only to you but, to all the people outside our beloved hometown. You could find great and high – class restaurants here like Grab A Crab or Orange Bistro which also have specialties on Chinese cuisines. As for the hotels, the one we could recommend, if you want to be pampered like a queen, would be East Asia Royale Hotel (From the name itself “Royale”, you’ll feel you are part of a royal family. hehehe.) Also, there are still great hotels out there like Sydney Hotel, that acceots you hospitably and can handle you with proper care during your stay. Soon, we are looking forward for Microtel to open up in our city too.

About the bombing issue, it’s quite disturbing for us to be attached with that issue. We all know the media in our society is quite, how do we put it, sometimes exaggerating gathered information just to attract viewers. (thanks to those Station wars!) Let’s not be blind, and face the truth that this reality exist. If there’s a bombing outbreak here, maybe nobody would be interested enough to invest in our city. Those great investors acknowledging our true existence along with their projects of building better life here is enough as a concrete evidence to tell, not only the country but, the whole world that we are fine and no threats are at stake. So, we’d love it if you just give our beautiful city another chance to express to you how great Generals are and how glad we are to see you visit us in our hometown :)

Isla Parilla is indeed a beauty because Gensan is also a beautiful place.

“Is the city really safe? We’ve been hearing a lot about bombings in your city that is why I was first hesitant to go.”

No offense meant, but if the city wasn’t safe at all, you could never have gone back to where you came from. You went home safe and unharmed, and you even had the enjoyment you were looking for.

Even Davao City had bombings, right? and anywhere in the world could be bombarded with lots of bad stuffs conceived by evil minds. I don’t understand why at the sound of Gensan, people already associate it with bombings when in fact we are a peaceful city here, and the Generals are peace-loving residents. Incidents of bombing in the area, are I guess, a product of destructive minds which are beyond our control, but we as a city, by the help of the Mayor and the local government officials are helping each other be vigilant to stop and condemn this bombings.

If you were at first hesitant to go here, I am just glad Robinsons Place, as big as they are now, chose to come and invest, thanks because they trusted us, and because of their trust in investing to Gensan, we are becoming a really strong and popular city.

I pray that many investors will soon come, because definitely, Gensan is, quoting what Weary Traveler said “More than meets the eye”. Come back soon. =)

    Reply to Yvon,

I stayed more than several years in Zamboanga City but I had to go back to GenSan since it is more peaceful than other places I have known. The bombings were works of people who are simply not in this place. But, bombings are everywhere anyway but this very very rare in Gensan. This is the only city where I don’t see a number of policemen around the place. This only shows Gensan has no problem at all with peace and order and local crimes.

But, GenSan holds beauty and character where I don’t see often in other places. The people are welcoming and the food are simply great!

My thumbs up to Sarangani Highlands too for its captivating city and sea panoramic views while I personally love the food of Grab a Crab, General’s brew and Genees all at surprisingly very low prices.

Come and visit us, we shall gladly welcome you and let you experience that Gensan can indeed a home away from home.

    @Yvon Thea – @Yvon Thea

    Hi, Ms. Yvon!

You have just seen a part and parcel of what Gensan has to offer. Should you wish to see all the best we have down here, feel free to coordinate with the Soccsksargen bloggers group, we are more than willing to assist you.

Gensan is a place inhabited by beautiful and peace loving Generals ( a term coined for our people). On a personal note, I was born and did grew up here and have raised my own family as well now here in Gensan. I have seen the transformation of Gensan from a city almost nobody heard of into a place we can proudly claim to be a city to reckon with. Investors kept on coming in. Businesses kept on sprouting. Tourists kept on visiting our place. Even word class performers, the group TOTO and Mr. David Pomeranz, had performed here.

Sadly, only bad news could generate larger income for our media moguls that’s why news about bombings and violence( which is ironic because people who are into this are not from Gensan) are always hyped up instead of the true beauty of Gensan and its people.

We need people like you, Ms. Yvon, who are open minded and could help us advocate that Gensan is a beautiful and peaceful place after all.

    Best regards.

We had common dreams to walk the talk about peace and development… but not a mile away anymore…. Our socio-economic movement here is, to begin with ordinary acts, extraordinary outcomes…

Please come again and bring your friends here, so we can chat about personal finances :)

We have bloggers here with social entrepreneurial spirit…

“Remember, fabled service consists in ordinary people doing ordinary things in extraordinary ways.”

Hello! Nice to know that you were having a great time with your family here in Gensan. Your choice of Family Country Hotel was already good as well Isla Parilla.. You can always come back there or you may try East Asia Royale Hotel though they don’t have a pool. For restaurant you can always visit Orange Bistro, Grab a Crab, Mandarin and Chowking.. *smiles*

    Is the city really safe?

***You’ve been here in GenSan before, you can judge for yourself. The media usually exaggerated the news for sensationalism. But I can give you the assurance that the city is safe in fact my Aunt and her husband from UK is here right now having their vacation. Remember in Davao Airport there was also bombing occurring . Is Davao safe?

Feel free to contact Gensan bloggers on your next visit. We will be happy to give you more information and maybe to meet you would be much better and we can have a cup of coffee with other gensan bloggers too. Have a blissful day!

I travel frequently to Gensan, even during the time when bombscares were at its peak. I haven’t really stayed in any of its hotels but I know that Gensan is safe. I’m going back to Gensan this Monday for a quick visit, and I expect a safe travel… (–,)

Yes, Robinsons Gensan is bigger than Robinsons Davao. And yes, our fishport is much bigger than your fishport which was built upon the insistence of your city after it was announced that an international fishport would be built here. :)

If your comment came from someone living in Luzon or Visayas, the apprehension would be understandable. But coming from you, a resident of Davao City, this comment invites comparisons between our cities. And so here’s my comment on your city:

The last time I was in Davao City where you reside, I was afraid to light up a cigarette. I had to find a place so dark and hidden from public view to smoke one. I’ve been hearing a lot about the Davao Death Squad, allegedly the private army of Mayor Digoy responsible for salvagings in your city that is why I was first hesitant to go. Di ba masakit isipin na masa-salvage ako just for smoking a cigarette? But I had no choice. I have an important matter to attend in your city. So in return, I ask you, is Davao City really, really safe?

Let me quote the interview my friend had during her scholarship application.
Q: What was the very hindrance in the performance of your Job?
A: The word “Mindanao.” (with further explanation of course which gained the nod of the panel)

Her explanation sort of became an eye-opener to the panel of interviewers. Sympathy to us? :) Tama ng exaggerated news! Itigil na! ooopps…wrong venue.hehe.. She is a Mindanaoan and she fights for her home. Gensan and Davao are both situated in the island of Mindanao. Diba dapat, kapit bisig (or kapit daan?! Hehe). We should share the same sentiment over this stigma unless of course, Davao is another island out of Mindanao? Peace! :)

Time and again, Gensan and Davao are not comparable with each other. Of course, I also saw the on-going construction of Robinsons in Davao and its not even half as big here in Gensan, but do we brag about it? We are happy that Robinsons is here. The construction is almost finished. You’d be surprised that Ayala is also eyeing strategic locations for their future investments in the city. Investors are pouring in, because they see also the potential of the city. Thank you.

Glad that you enjoyed your stay even how surprised you were with the experience. Isla Parilla in Alabel, Sarangani Province is a man-made, originally built as a rest house or a private get away for the family. The newly improved Family Country Hotel and Convention Center is a good choice to stay, relaxed and quiet.

Taking it positively, I would be happy that somehow, non-resident of Gensan, appreciated our city. I would not boast about tourism because we lack of it. The City is just “like a box of chocolates, You never know what you’re gonna get,” right Forrest? (hehe).

However, much to my amazement, coming from you, a Davaoeño, its quite “surprising” also for me to decipher such observation :) By the way, my best friend is a full-blooded Davaoeño, yet her family loves to visit the white beaches in Glan (1.20 hour drive from Gensan) :) They had their lunch at Mandarin before taking off to Davao :)

A college friend of my mine visited Gensan (her first time). When her father was still alive, it’s a no-no that she visits Gensan or any place in Mindanao. She lives in QUEZON CITY all her life. Shed only been to North Luzon, the farthest shed been to, and she was glad she was able to come in the city. She only stayed a day and went straight to Davao. Much to my surprise, she had her second visit after a few months. She was amazed with the architecture of the Our Lady of Peace of Good Voyage Church and had fun riding the tricycle from East Asia Royale HOtel to the Church. Take note, ALONE. Safe naman pala eh.hehe. She enjoyed their dinner at Ranchero and was surprised when I took her at Club 101. I could have toured her around if she stayed a little longer.

So, we invite you to visit Gensan once again. Go over Bariles’ site and you’d be surprised of the information you can get. Though we do not offer as much as Davao has, we can assure you that it would be one unique experience :) Magandang Gensan!

    Dayon kamo sa Gensan! :)

“I think this one is bigger than the one they are constructing in Davao” – So inggit kayo no? ajejeje
“Had the chance to visit your place for two days. We stayed at Isla Parilla and Family Country Hotel because they have swimming pools. Can you recommend other hotels and resorts that have a pool?”
How about a Chinese restaurant?
“Is the city really safe? We’ve been hearing a lot about bombings in your city that is why I was first hesitant to go.” – Ngano sa Davao City ninyo, walay bombings? Di ba vital installations nga airport og wharf pa gyud ang nabombahan diha? Di ba makalilisang mosakay og erflen og barko diha?
“But I had no choice. I have an important matter to attend in your city.” Haven’t u heard of torpedos? ajejeje
“Surprisingly, I had a great time with my family.” – i em sorprays ngano wala na lang nimo mi gisagpa. maayo kaayo ka moinsulto Day Yvon Thea, disimulado gayud. bravo! tikabaw day! ur city’s tourisom opis shud give u a medal! ajejeje

you can freely check other categories of this site for you to be able to know other hotels and restaurants here. this site is very informative, i must say. and about the bombing issue, i wonder, kung hindi safe ang GenSan, ang Manila ba, hindi rin ba safe? also Davao? and any other place? i don’t think there’s a safe place left here in the world. but, i can say, sa almost 19 years ko na stay dito sa GenSan, eh buhay pa naman ako, with complete body parts. hehe. :D
