Hong Kong Columnist calls Philippines “nation of servants”

Posted by bariles On March - 30 - 2009 - Visited 5878 times, 1 so far today

Never in my life have I ever come across a blog post as racist as this one written by supposedly “best-selling author and columnist” Chip Tsao of Hong Kong.

Entitled “The War at Home” and featured in the news blog, HK Online published yesterday, March 29, 2009, (but nowhere to be found now amidst calls for the editors to apologize together with the author) the write-up deals mainly on the Philippines’ opposition to China’s continued presence in the Spratlys” and his bitterly scathing remarks about the country which he calls a “nation of servants“.

Hong Kong Author & Award-winning columnist, Chip Tsao. The Philippines' new Public Enemy #1

Hong Kong’s author & award-winning columnist Chip Tsao: Philippines’ Public Enemy #1 for his racial slur on the country, “nation of servants”

He then related how he “summoned Louisa, my domestic assistant who holds a degree in international politics from the University of Manila, hung a map on the wall, and gave her a harsh lecture. I sternly warned her that if she wants her wages increased next year, she had better tell every one of her compatriots in Statue Square on Sunday that the entirety of the Spratly Islands belongs to China.”

I won’t want to say much about Chip Tsao’s article and let you, my dear readers react to his remarks.  I am supposed to be sleeping now but after reading about it, I knew that I had to share it with you.

Although this post is not particularly about GenSan which this blog Bariles Republic is all about after all, still it pertains to the hundreds, no, make that thousands of OFW’s from Soccsksargen who are slaving it out not only in Hong Kong but all over the world, for the future of their families back home.

UPDATE:  4:30PM, March 30, 2009. As of this writing, Chip Tsao’s article on the “nation of servants” has been taken off the HK Online site but Bariles Republic has managed to save it.  You can view and read it in its entirety by CLICKING HERE

UPDATE 2: HK Online Magazine has publicly apologized but Chip Tsao himself remained defiant and unapologetic. Below is a SCREEN SHOT of the article.

The Filipinos may somehow have their lapses. I could name a few but what I could not take as a lapse is to be treated as a slumdog.

This man is simply having one superiority syndrome like other nationalities who belittle the underprivileged nations like ours. He may be a renowned writer but he is quite poor in integrity and character as a person and as a columnist.

A columnist by all cause must consider both sides and must separate his personal opinions from facts. Degrading others through writing is simply too immature and irresponsible. His words are no different from the ones who are not educated at all. In short, full of words, but short in wisdom.

But like what other Filipino politician said, this must be an eye opener for us. This Spratlys’ issue is only one of the things we have to stand for as nation. We must however stand for everything: poverty, corruption, greed, and other ill-causing action which put the country at a more dismal and discouraging state.

I wish while our politicians strongly argue on the statement of this HK columnist, they too shall be proactive in fighting and addressing bigger issues of the country.

Mag-hulat pa ba ta nga laiton ta para mag-mata?

Sighs from me and my blogs:

Well Mr. Chip Tsao, you called Philippines a “Land Of Servants” then a have to level to your standard & write this reply.Since Hongkong is part of China now you pick one of the list below which suit the title of your beloved country.

    China:
    – “The Land of Imitators & Cloners” (you guys sells 100% copy cat, crappy stuffs & the world’s best)

    – “The Land Of Number 1 Human Rights Violators” (how many political activist & innocent people murdered by your government every year not including Tibet?)

    – “The Land Of Number 1 Illegal Immigrant Exporter (you guys export thousands of container goods in the world including humans)

    – “The Land Of Number 1 Top Secret Military Technology Stealers” (i though you guys are smart & has brain, why your government stealing technology from other country instead of making your own?)

    – “The Land Of Child Laborer” (how many child laborer working inside your factories”)

before writing any degrading articles on your neighboring country pls. read the above list & you can shove it in your ass! you f**king chinks!

On the other facet of the article…

I do not know if Chipipay Tsao’s view on the Spratlys issue is reflective of the official position of China on the matter of sovereignty over the said group of islands. But it should remind us (and the rest of the Spratly co-claimant countries) how we can be put in a very precarious position if a regional power opts to flex its muscles to gain leverage in an obviously very tight geo-political contest between several nations.

there’s no problem in being a nation of servants. A servant is an obedient, god-fearing person. Even Jesus Christ called himself a servant of people, right? What pissed me off with his article is the fact that he implied that we should bow down to the chinese, since he quoted “As a nation of servants, you don’t flex your muscles at your master, from whom you earn most of your bread and butter.” He also stated that he reprimanded his filipina maid bcoz of this issue. This type of outright idiocy of some people is making the world a bitter place. Even if this is a satirical comment, he still has a public image to maintain and a responsibility to his readers to provide a positive sentiment to whatever issues he might feel strongly about, especially in the midst of financial, political and emotional turmoil that most of us are facing right now. Therefore, we are not in a sound mind to treat something like this as a satire.

  47. roguh_4563 Says:

all he wrote in his article is not worth living..
-”Manila has just claimed sovereignty over the scattered rocks in the South China Sea called the Spratly Islands, complete with a blatant threat from its congress to send gunboats to the South China Sea to defend the islands from China if necessary.”
-first is that we are not claiming sovereignty over this island because it is ours. you look for the recent maps of the philippines and you will see there and are not threatening china, we are just trying to protect what is ours.

-”The reason: there are more than 130,000 Filipina maids working as $3,580-a-month cheap labor in Hong Kong. As a nation of servants, you don’t flex your muscles at your master, from whom you earn most of your bread and butter.”
-in fact this is not the reason why we are trying to get the islands. its a fallacy of false cause and false analogy and a good and a multi-awarding columnist know this. and besides this is not a cheap labor as you said. yes its true, we are nation of servants but a good servants to our bad masters. yes, its true that we are earning our butter and bread to our master but as a nations of bad masters, you dont flex your muscles at your good servants from whom you earn most of your good service. without them, you have no service.

-”As a patriotic Chinese man, the news has made my blood boil. I summoned Louisa, my domestic assistant who holds a degree in international politics from the University of Manila, hung a map on the wall, and gave her a harsh lecture. I sternly warned her that if she wants her wages increased next year, she had better tell every one of her compatriots in Statue Square on Sunday that the entirety of the Spratly Islands belongs to China.”
-you are not a patriotic Chinese man anymore because you are trying to down your country. because of what you have writtenm the whole world now thinks that you chinese are very arrogant and very prejudice against other countries. SO who is more intelligent, you who is a best writer but a low personality or your domestic assistant but holds a degree in internat’l politics from one of the prestigious university of the philippines and with a good personality that offers a good service to his bad master?. No need to warn her because Filipinos not only wants money..they also want a respect from other people like their masters and as i have said earlier, Spratly does not belong to China. you are the one who is claiming it.

-”Grimly, I told her that if war breaks out between the Philippines and China, I would have to end her employment and send her straight home, because I would not risk the crime of treason for sponsoring an enemy of the state by paying her to wash my toilet and clean my windows 16 hours a day. With that money, she would pay taxes to her government, and they would fund a navy to invade our motherland and deeply hurt my feelings.”
-ok, if they want war, we Filipinos are not running for them. we are brave not like you, you are back fighting philippines by writing an articles that is so rude and not true about the philippines. Why not end their employment and we will see who will suffer most, as i have said Filipinos can live without money but with a high self reliance and self respect. Unlike you chinese…Again your judgment to the Filipinos are Fallacies. How can you say that it will happen to the employment of Filipinos in your country?..

-”Oh yes. The government of the Philippines would certainly be wrong if they think we Chinese are prepared to swallow their insult and sit back and lose a Falkland Islands War in the Far East. They may have Barack Obama and the hawkish American military behind them, but we have a hostage in each of our homes in the Mid-Levels or higher. Some of my friends told me they have already declared a state of emergency at home. Their maids have been made to shout “China, Madam/Sir” loudly whenever they hear the word “Spratly.” They say the indoctrination is working as wonderfully as when we used to shout, “Long live Chairman Mao!” at the sight of a portrait of our Great Leader during the Cultural Revolution. I’m not sure if that’s going a bit too far, at least for the time being. ”
-oh correction. you are certainly wrong. We are the one who are prepared for your very insulting judgment to us Filipinos. And Barack Obama is not the reason why we are fighting for justice, its because we know what we are doing, we know what is right. So your true color came now..You are telling that they are hostages?, so you are telling also that chinese are kidnappers? you are teliing that chinese are very injustice because of what you are doing in your maids?….

We are proud of our Filipino servants and helpers or more known to us Filipinos as DH (Domestic Helpers) for quite sometime they have contributed a lot in stabilizing our economy at least for this we are sure that most Filipinos can very well manage to survive finding a decent job anywhere around the world and even outside of there comfort zone not only because they speak better English and can follow orders better than most “educated” Chinese in Hong Kong.

Let me describe to you what the Chinese people are known for here in Dubai.

In a mall called Dragon Mart, they are the ones carrying baggages and pushing carts for Filipino shoppers. We give them decent tip coz we actually PITY them. Some are very old and there are even pregnant Chinese ladies still pushing carts . Whose serving who?

And guess who are known here in Dubai as the filthiest and the cheapest prostitutes? Yeah you guessed it right. Its your precious Chinese girls. I mean construction workers and cab drivers line up in these girls room for a quick fix.Coz these are the only guys who can have some at a very CHIP price.

Now should these protitutes also shout ” Spratly’s belong to the Philippines!” each time a construction worker is done with her?

I am a professional guy working here in Dubai but I am particularly proud of the Filipina DH coz they are the best at what they do. Employers are willing to pay a higher wage just to have a Filipina maid.

Now for HK Magazine… if you have any decency left.. you will not allow such a careless ignorant writer to work of you.

Then again its just my opinion.

  76. Jay-Are/Rey Says:

Let us understand that a servant plays the greatest role where he or she lives.

Being mocked and judged negatively as a servant is just unveiling the true value of having the character of a noble individual who is even more willing to serve inorder to humbly live; and that by all means you are proud to say that righteously you are exactly fulfilling the greatest calling every person has on earth.

Only negative people see negative things in life, and every negative thing he perceive reflect who he is in his entire life. Mr. Chip Tao had spoken this false impression with such description among us filipinos, which reveals only the true image he has inside-out. Ironically speaking he is an author and “award-winning” columnist, and yet it doesn’t show the quality of his words.

If only this guy knows that Chinese people are positively imparting the servanthood where we also humbly learned and acquired. I hope and pray that what he said will let him realize that no one on earth lives without the heart of a servant.

I am proud to be called a servant, serving God, my family, community and this nation because time will come my Creator would joyfully tell me, “Welcome my good and faithful servant, enter into the house of your Master”. Godbless

To All Our Leaders in the Government from the President down.

As a filipino citizen I am humbly speaking to you that this message we received from Mr. Chip Tao will open your hearts and minds that you do not live and serve because you acquire the positions inorder to get what you want from this country. You must see how we filipinos are being looked-down by these people around us.

We live today because we serve the present and prepare the future especially to the next generation. If only our filipino people can stay in their native land just like me and serve and enjoy what is due to every citizen born in this country, TIME IS NOT YET LATE TO OPEN YOUR EYES AND REALIZE.

God will surely judge every act done here on earth. Every wicked person enjoys what he or she believes he has presently.

I pity on you because life after you live on earth will be measured your final destiny.

    God bless the Philippines.

COmmon people, if you have not been yet to HONG KONG CENTRAL FOOTBRIDGES then you should go there and see for yourself why Chip Tsao said NAtions of Servants. It’s hurting but it’s the reality where you can see our fellow Filipino Domestic Helper Heroes spent their off days relaxing on the footbridge floors lined-up about 200 meters long lying on a tore carton boxes. Some were playing ‘tong-its’, some were having picnic, some were sleeping, some were just chatting in groups, some were making camp tents on that very centre of HOng Kong which looks like the footbridges of Ayala-Greenbelt Areas. So, just imagine that. All I wish and hoping that our Philippine Embassy of Hong Kong can do something about that. Hope our government can do something like any place in Hong KOng for them to spend their off days, not on that very centre where most of the people also pass by and watching our fellow kababayans looking pity. It really made me cry when I saw them.

My dearest Pinoys, don’t be upset. Who knows, perhaps God might just be putting us in foreign lands for training and sharpenning of our skills in preparation for something big. There might be a greater plan for the Philippines ahead.

To give way for the return of our highly skilled brethren from abroad, we must first remove the local tyrants and ridiculous political system that stranggled us. They are just few people, why can’t we overcome them? Just be patient and continue the pressure against corruption. Even a stone will break thru the constant droplets of water thru time. But I’m not suggesting we wait that long to take on the politicians who are not as patriotic and productive as our overseas workers.

The strategy they are using to perpetuate in power is not new. Only that they are able to neutralize us thru control of policies and funds.

Now, they cannot control everybody. There are many good and noble men among us. Those who are willing to lose job, businesses, career, etc. as the price for the defeat of corruption, please move now. May God bless us all. Good luck.

As to you Mr. Tsao, don’t belittle the people who are obviously better than you. To be Filipino means a lot of good traits and character that you don’t qualify. I won’t hire a guy like you to manage my business, not even to clean my toilet.

It hurts, right? Don’t sit around, do something about it. If you forget the personality who wrote this and look at this in a factual way, is it not true? Do you know how the Filipinas are treated in Japan? They are considered cheap and wasteful women? Even the cats and dogs in Japan are honored better than the poor Filipina ladies. Who is to be blamed? Not Chinese or Japanese but the Philipinos themselves. Protect your women and children.

Take the example of the Sri Lankan President. He eradicated the export of housemaids of Sri Lanka to the middle east. These women were used as sex workers of a different nature. It was a severe blow to our cultural and religious heritage. So our President single-handedly stopped this non-sense. Some journalist from China, need not say this. He has to first look at what his country women are doing? I hope he will write something that will stir up the emotions of those Chinese ladies!
