I was 6. naaalaala ko ito buong kapitbahay namen naglabas ng basin para lang masulyapan ung eclipse sa tubig At ung film ng kodak pa ginamit namen dito para makita lang sa taas ung eclipse…jejejeje! Thanks for the amazing history….nakakatuwa talaga kapag luma.

that was a wonderful experience; my brother George “Ojie” Bayani won the “Best Jingle for Solar Eclipse” He won a prize of 5000 pesos, and before malaki na ang 5k.His jingle was being played on all radio stations in Gensan that whenever marining ko talagang so proud ako for him.
Anyway, Gensan is a memorable city for me and my family (Bayani Family)

@Lryss katsiavriades, thank you for your photos of that eclipse. I hope you are still in touch with the people you met here. GenSan has grown tremendously in terms of the economy, population and fame (owing to World Boxing Champ Manny Pacquiao). Don’t you think it’s time you rediscover it again?

Well it’s nice to see my photos in your blog. This was my second total eclipse of the sun. I have now been to 12 including two that were clouded out. I enjoyed my time in General Santos City and made lots of friends.

I was at home with mom, dad (when he was still alive) and siblings. I was so young then and we were totally amazed by the spectacular display of heavenly powers. ^-^ truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience I’ll never ever forget.

Whoa!!! I am six then but I could still remember how festive Gensan was. I can still recall the big pineapple replica in the Oval Plaza (from Dole I guess), flea markets, fun rides… and lots for eclipse accessories. We just used negative film then…

I was a senior college student at NDDC. I was out the whole night before the solar eclipse because I was fascinated by the revelries brought about by the amazing phenomenon. I was with my buddies Tata Galindo, Huyos Dacera, Arnel “Maoy” Limjap, Brother Ex, and Brod Berlin. We were on our drinking spree and we slept at the house of Brod Berlin (I guessed he was related to Ms. Becky Berlin) somewhere at City Heights. We woke up in the morning groping in the dark…at that was the solar eclipse na pala! How nice to remember the old escapades!

i was 5 years old then! so i hardly remember what i am doing that time hehehe.but what i rmember was the partial solar eclipse last 1995,i was on my sixth grade and im in school that moment…hehehehehe but last july 22 i experience total solar eclipse in my bed hahahaha coz im still asleep ……….

i remembered this… we had visitors from cebu then… they just came to “dadiangas” to witness this phenomenon… everything was abuzz gyud that time… mura’g kita ang sentro sa universe atong panahon… hehehe…

@Randy, magandang gensan! Ang ganda naman ng kwento mo. Naging inspirasyon pala sa iyo ang pagpunta rito ng Queen Elizabeth nung 1988 at ginawa mong daan para maabot mo ang pangarap mo. Galing mo! I did not know na may cruise ship pala ditong dumaong noon kung di mo pa binanggit. Salamat sa pagsulat mo rito, kabayan. Mabuhay ka!

I was @ City hall rooptop that time,,grabe…daming foreigner pumunta kahit saang sulok sa gensan…halos 1 week event yung nangyari noon..naalala ko na pumunta pa doon yung world famous cruisehip Queen Elizabeth…to witness the event…makikita mo sa rooftop ng city hall
super ganda na napakalaking barko..noong lang ako nakakita ng napakalaking barko na “luxury ship” after the event..pinangarap ko na sana makapag trabaho ako sa cruisehip dahil super ganda talaga yung nakita ko noon bata pa ako…..ngayun dito na ako sa cruisehip nag trabaho base in Miami florida under Royal Caribean cruiseline…5 times pa ang laki ng queen elizabeth yung sinasakyan ko ngayun..
isang event na di ko talaga makakalimutan!!!!!!

@Jen, sus dati kinder ka pa, pero ngayon in time for your 2nd eclipse, may kinder ka na rin no? Makahadluk man pud ang itsura sa mga ati-atihan, di ba? I don’t blame you… (lol).

@Mikko, i remember that there was a sort of “mini competition” that time between Davao and GenSan proclaiming that theirs is the best spot to be at the time of the eclipse. You’re right because GenSan was really the “epicenter” of the this natural phenomenon and that’s where most of the eclipse hunters went. Thanks!

@Cidy, at that time, everyone used old films to view the eclipse and nobody was around to tell us that those things were not enough and could ruin our eyes. Pati yata yung mga binibentang mga cardboard visors, also utilized old films…..hehehe! But I really admire you for going up the city hall rooftop at such an early age ha? HehehehE!

@Mackay, for most of us, the solar eclipse in 1988 was really one of our most unforgettable. Despite the warnings and old folks tales, we managed to survive and so here we are, experiencing our 2nd eclipse, 21 years after. Cheers to our 3rd one!
