Bleed for Life: A Blood Letting & Typing Drive of Soccsksargen Bloggers!

Posted by bariles On August - 31 - 2010 8 COMMENTS

In the wake of the alarming rise of dengue cases in GenSan and outlying areas, the Soccsksargen Bloggers in cooperation with the Philippine Red Cross and the Robinsons Place-GenSan is spearheading a worthy cause this very weekend!

This is BLEED FOR LIFE: A Blood Lettting & Blood Typing Drive on September 5, 2010, General Santos City’s 42nd Charter Anniversary.

BLEED FOR LIFE is inviting people from all over who wish to do something good and worthwhile on the City’s Charter Day to donate their blood anytime from 9:30pm – 1:00pm during this half-day blood letting drive by proceeding to the Robinsons Activity Center Back Portion, near Mercury Drugstore.  There, Red Cross Volunteers and the members of the Soccsksargen Bloggers will assist you.

If you just want to find out your blood type, there will also be facilities for that at no cost to you.

For those inclined to give blood, please take note of the following blood donor guidelines from the Philippine Red Cross:

Preparations before donating blood:

  1. Have enough rest and sleep.
  2. There should be No alcohol intake at least 24 hours prior to blood donation.
  3. There should be No medication intake for at least 24 hours prior to blood donation.
  4. Eat something prior to blood donation but avoid fatty and oily food.
  5. Drink lots of fluids like water or juice drinks.

Steps in donating blood:

  1. Have your weight taken by a volunteer.
  2. Register and complete the donor registration form.  Be honest.
  3. Have a volunteer check your blood type and hemoglobin.
  4. A doctor will examine you, the blood donor.
  5. Actual donation process. The amount of blood to be donated depends on the donor’s weight and his blood pressure. An amount of either 350cc or 450cc usually takes 10 minutes or less to extract.
  6. A 5 to 10 minute rest and plenty of fluid intake is necessary after donation.

What to do after blood donation:

  1. Drink lots of fluids like water or juices.
  2. Refrain from stooping down.
  3. Avoid doing strenuous activities like:
    1. Lifting large and heavy objects
    2. Driving large vehicles such as bus, trucks, etc.
    3. Operating large machines.
  4. Avoid using your punctured arm in lifting heavy objects.
  5. Apply pressure on the punctured site of your arm and lift the arm in case the site still bleeds.
  6. If there is swelling and discoloration on the punctured site, try applying cold compress for 24 hours and then hot compress for the next 24 hours.
  7. If you feel dizzy and nauseated, lie down with your feet elevated. Drink plenty of juices.  Eventually and in just a few minutes, it will pass.

Who can donate blood?

You can donate blood if you:

  • Are in good health
  • Between 16 to 65 years old (16 and 17 years old need the consent of parents)
  • Weigh at least 110 pounds
  • With a blood pressure between:
  • Systolic: 90-160 mmHg
  • Diastolic: 60-100 mm
  • Pass the physical and health history assessments by a physician on site.

PNRC Blood Service Facilities carefully screen potential blood donors. The screening guidelines are important and necessary to ensure that blood donation is safe for both the donor and the person who receives his blood.

During the screening process, donors fill out a blood donation questionnaire form.  This includes direct and personal questions about behaviours known to carry a higher risk of blood-borne infections — infections that are transmitted through the blood. These behaviours include prostitution, intravenous drug use and others. A trained physician asks donors about their medical/ health history and conducts a physical examination.

This includes checking  blood pressure, pulse and temperature of the potential donors.

All of the information furnished by the donors during this evaluation are kept strictly confidential.

Remember that blood saves lives. Blood donation is also advantageous to the donors. Click this to find out why. Join the Soccsksargen Bloggers in their BLEED FOR LIFE:  A Blood Letting & Typing Drive on GenSan’s 42nd Charter Day, Sunday, September 5, 2010, 9:30am to 1:00pm, Robinsons Place GenSan Activity Center, General Santos City.

Thanks to our generous sponsors, Robinsons Place GenSan, Piyesta KTV and Resto Bar, Ms. Jinky Borela, Ms. Chic Escal, Rolee’s Bakeshop, GandaEverSoMuch.com, GenSan News Online Mag.  You may still donate to this cause or spread the word around.  Text the #s 0922-8885454.  Thanks to Blogger Rabsky Villanueva for the poster above.

Are you ready for SEX, the Soccsksargen EXperience?

Posted by bariles On August - 30 - 2010 29 COMMENTS

Naaah, it’s not what you think it is dear readers!

SEX here in the title is short for “The Soccsksargen EXperience” – An Orgy of Food, Fun and Adventure.

It is basically an offshoot of a unique activity which the Soccsksargen Bloggers spearheaded in May 2010.

If you happened to follow Bariles’ posts on a regular basis, you surely must have found out that last summer, the group that he co-founded, the Soccsksargen Bloggers conducted the very successful “Soccsksargen Summer Safari“.

The  safari involved touring with the special assistance of GandaEverSoMuch.com with Safari Partners at least 20 bloggers from Davao and Cagayan de Oro Cities to choice food establishments and tourist spots in South Central Mindanao and giving them two days they would not ever forget.

Their thoughts on their exhilirating experience that is the Soccksargen Summer Safari were immortalized in their blog posts which you can all check by simply clicking here and here.  Those are more than the amount of positive publicity on the Internet that we could ever imagine from out of the activity!

For the Tuna Festival Month of September 2010, which starts this week, it will be the turn of another group of bloggers to experience Soccsksargen much like the first batch of visitors did,  plus more!

This time, to give the event name a more catchy spin to it, Bariles and GandaEverSoMuch.com have naughtily dubbed it “SEX: the Soccsksargen EXperience.  An Orgy of Fun, Food and Adventure.”

Here is the sizzling poster concocted by the genius mind of Soccksargen Blogger Alexis Chua.

Well, that is all Bariles can say for now.

Everything else is a secret.

Shhhhhhh!!!!

They lorded it among a total of 91,008 examinees where only 37,679 made it.

Taking the #3 slot is Allyce Joana Toledo De Leon of University of Santo Tomas who garnered an average of 86.0.  Ms. De Leon finished her high school at the Gen. Santos City Hope Christian School in Barangay City Heights.

She is followed by Joy Anne Acierto Tan of Notre Dame of Dadiangas University where she graduated Cum Laude.  Ms. Tan took the #7 spot in the topnotchers list.  (Check out her tribute poster below from the NDDU website.)

Nyoy Volante at KCC Mall of GenSan

Posted by bariles On August - 27 - 2010 7 COMMENTS

For the Tuna Festival Month of September 2010, the KCC Mall of GenSan is lining up a series of special events meant to add more luster to the city’s celebration.

For starters, on the heels of its hugely successful Aiza Seguerra Album Tour, it has booked acoustic performer Nyoy Volante for a CONCERT on September 11, 2010 at their cavernous KCC Convention and Events Center.

Nyoy Volante has been around since the initial wave of acoustic music mania came about a few years back. Right now, he’s promoting the singles of his upcoming album which includes his version of  ”SOMEDAY“, the song he penned for his ex-girlfriend Nina, who eventually turned it into a hit.

By the way, Bariles happens to love Nina’s first take of “Someday” which he is pretty sure she will perform in her SOLO GENSAN CONCERT tomorrow, August 28.    This one by Nyoy is also good though and sang with so much conviction.

Here is the MTV of Nyoy Volante‘s “Someday”.

Tickets to KCC Mall of GenSan’s NYOY VOLANTE CONCERT are not for sale. To get one, just exchange your receipts of purchases from the KCC Department Store totalling P300.

Hurry!!! These tickets are very limited!

For more info on the Nyoy Volante Concert at the KCC Mall of GenSan, please call the #s (083) 554-5555.

SM City GenSan perspectives/plans presented to Darlene by Design Team

Posted by bariles On August - 26 - 2010 190 COMMENTS

Barely two weeks ago, GenSan City Mayor Darlene Antonino-Custodio finally got a glimpse of how her city’s next mall will look like.

The design team of the upcoming SM City GenSan composed of representatives from Monolith Construction Dev. Corp, general contractor; Jose Siao Ling & Associates, architect; and D.A. Abcede & Associates, project manager,   paid her a visit at her office at the City Hall.  They were accompanied by GenSan Chamber prexy Jan Ced and Architect Michael Ang, project coordinator for SM City GenSan.

"SM CITY GENSAN ARCHITECT JOSE SIAO LING PRESENTS SM CITY GENSAN'S PERSPECTIVES AND PLANS TO GENSAN MAYOR DARLENE CUSTODIO AS ENGR. DENNIS ABCEDE JR. (VP, DAA ASSOCIATES) & ENGR. LITO BABASA (CONSTRUCTION MGR, DAA ASSO) LOOK ON."

It was there that the group headed by SM City Gensan Architect Jose Siao Ling, presented her with the perspectives, floor plans and blue prints of one of the most-anticipated projects in South Central Mindanao.  Assisting him in the presentation were Engr. Dennis Abcede, Jr. (D.A.Abecede & Associates VP) and Engr. Mariano T. See Diet (Monolith Construction Dev. Corp. EVP/Gen Manager).

"(LEFT TO RIGHT. PHOTO SHOWS RUDY T. CHUA (DIRECTOR, QUALITY PRE-CAST CONCRETE), ARCHITECT MICHAEL ANG (PROJECT COORDINATOR FOR SM CITY GENSAN), ENGR. DENNIS ABCEDE JR. (VP, DENNIS ABCEDE & ASSOCIATES), ARCHITECT JOSE SIAO LING (PRINCIPAL ARCHITECT, JOSE SIAO LING & ASSOCIATES), MAYOR DARLENE ANTONINO-CUSTODIO, ENGR. MARIANO T. SEE DIET (EVP, MONOLITY CONSTRUCTION DEV. CORP), ENGR LITO BABASA (CONSTRUCTION MNGR, DAA & ASSOCIATES), ENGR JESTON MANANGUETE (GEN. CONTRACTOR, PROJECT MNGR), ENGR VICTORIANO OSIAS (FORMWORKS ENGR, MCDC), AND MR. JAN CED (PRES, GENSAN CHAMBER OF COMMERCE).

Mayor Custodio was visibly impressed with the SM City GenSan perspectives and designs and stayed longer for the dialogue which followed which tackled traffic management, sewerage system, garbage handling, employment opportunities and tax incentives, among other topics.  Together with the mayor were City Administator Atty. Jong Gonzales and Chief of Staff Myrna Mejorada.

According to the SM Team, the two-story mall will cover a total of 100,000 sq. meters of floor space, which is bigger than SM City Davao’s 80,000 sq. meters.

Its main frontage will face San Miguel Street which will be widened into a four-lane avenue.  To see where it is, click this—> SM City GenSan location.

SM Prime Holdings has already acquired a portion of the triangular lot straddling J. Catolico Avenue and San Miguel Street for this plan.  It will also provide the traffic signal system at the junction of Santiago Boulevard and San Miguel.

"THE SM CITY GENSAN PERSPECTIVE OF ITS FRONTAGE FACING SAN MIGUEL STREET."

Very noticeable in the perspectives presented to the mayor is the uniquely designed logo of the mall which displays a bigger and more prominent rendering of the words “GENERAL SANTOS“.  From Architect Jose Siao Ling came the answer that the emphasis on the Tuna Capital’s name was due to their knowledge that the people of GenSan are extremely proud of their famous city and this is SM’s way of solidifying it.

(Upon hearing this, Bariles who noted the peculiarity could only gasp, “Whoa GenSan!”)

At the Santiago Boulevard side of  SM City GenSan is their terminal for public vehicles like jeeps, vans and probably (as suggested by Mayor Custodio), parking for trucks which are usually the vehicles of choice of excursionists and shoppers from the rest of the region.

For sure, the mayor quipped, once SM City GenSan opens, there will be a beeline of these vehicles to the Tuna Capital and the mall should be ready for this.

"THIS IS THE SM CITY GENSAN PERSPECTIVE OF ITS LEFT SIDE. TAKE NOTE OF THE SECOND FLOOR BALCONY, A FEATURE PRESENT IN NEWER SM MALLS AND THUS DOING AWAY WITH THE BORING BOX STRUCTURES."

To help enliven GenSan’s night life and cement its reputation as Region 12′s entertainment capital, SM City General Santos will house its Al Fresco restaurants and bars on the other side of the mall which will also operate until midnight similar to Robinsons Place.   Their row of dining establishments promises a refreshing and relaxing ambience since at its center will be a large dancing fountain, an important water element in the newer malls of today.

To top it all, all the four cinemas of SM City GenSan at the second floor will be 3D-equipped.

Ground breaking and fencing of the compound will start immediatly after September 10, 2010 and based on the design team’s estimates,  construction will be finished by 10 months at the very least.

This means therefore, that aside from Robinsons Place GenSan, KCC Mall of GenSan and Gaisano City GenSan, the people of Soccksargen will have another shopping destination in time for Christmas 2011 – and its name is SM City General Santos.

So now, the question is, where would you shop for your Christmas presents in December next year?

ASAP Sessionistas Live in GenSan!

Posted by bariles On August - 25 - 2010 4 COMMENTS

In their first major event, Denville Music & Production and Record Breaker Events Managements, in celebration of the 2010 Tuna Festival Month is bringing to GenSan one of the most popular groupings of talented performers we often see on television.

Generals, be ready for the ASAP SESSIONISTAS Live in GenSan, a once-in-a-lifetime-concert where you get not one, not two, not three but six performers in one show!!!

Most of you must have known by now that the ASAP Sessionistas are composed of Asia’s acoustic wonder and former child star Aiza Seguerra, Bossa Nova Queen Sitti, birit queen Nina, former MYMP singer Juris, R&B singer and former South Border vocalist Duncan Ramos and balladeer Richard Poon.

They are called ASAP Sessionistas because they regularly perform together at ABS-CBN‘s Sunday musical variety show, ASAP.  They have had countless concert performances all around the globe already where there are large Filipino communities, thanks to TFC.

This won’t be the first time that Sitti, Aiza Seguerra, Richard Poon and Duncan will be in GenSan.  They have managed to be here one time or the other individually in some shows.  Nina too will be here in a concert performance on August 21 at the formerly named Anchor Driving Range.

Tickets to this September 10, 2010 GenSan Concert are priced at P1,800 (VIP), P1,500 (GOLD), P900 (SILVER), P600 (PATRON) and P350 (GEN. ADMISSION) which are very affordable considering that you get so to witness so much talent perform LIVE.

And as an additional treat, GenSan’s very ownCENTERPOINT BANDc” will front act for the Manila-based artits.  Now that’s really getting more than you bargained for!

For more info and for ticket reservations, please call telephone #s (083)  302-0940; 0922-825-2704.

After years and years of waiting, subscribers of SkyCable in General Santos City whose kids are followers and fans of Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck, the Jonas Brothers, Mr. Bean, Lilo & Stich, Hannah Montana, HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL, among others and who themselves loved the Disney Classics like Bambi, Snow White & the Seven Dwarfs, Mary Poppins, etc. are in for a surprse.

The cable channel responsible for beaming them to the world, the Disney Channel will now be available in GenSan as part of SkyCable‘s new programming!

Yes, you read it right.

Beginning on September 1, 2010, the magical cable channel, The Disney Channel will be available in GenSan, joining other stateside family-oriented channels like Nickelodeon and The Cartoon Network.

For the uninitiated, the Disney Channel offers the best of the movies and cartoons from the vault of Walt Disney Productions plus its current line-up of wholesome teen-oriented series, new animated shows, musicals, comedies, and fun movies for the whole family.  It is available in other parts of the country excluding GenSan.  (Check out the Disney Channel Asia’s TV Guide by CLICKING HERE.)

This is all due to the innovation which SkyCable GenSan has done and the inclusion of the Disney Channel comes with their basic cable TV channel line-up which it now calls SkyCable Silver.

This new monthly plan will cost subscribers P570 beginning September 1, 2010.

Aside from the addition of the Disney Channel, the SkyCable Silver Plan will also include seven (7) other new and exciting entertainment channels like SOLAR Sports, 2nd Avenue, ETC, XING KONG, Phoenix International, CCTV F and CCTV 10.

“Big & Small” Kids Photo Contest Winners

Posted by bariles On August - 22 - 2010 4 COMMENTS

After weeks of speculating on who are gonna be the winners of the Search for the Big & Small Kids Photo Contest, GenSan News Online is now ready to release the results.

From out of the combination of votes tallied from the Facebook Fan Page of the Big & Small Company, from the comments counted from our blog post featuring the photos of the kids, and the vote coupons received at the Big & Small Company outlet at the KCC Mall of GenSan (for every P100 purchase), the management of the kids apparel store and the contest organizer was able to come up with the winners.

The entries were divided into two – the Toddler Category and the Infant Category.

Much weight and percentage was placed on the votes from the Facebook Fanpage of B&GC.  All the 800++ votes from this blog were also counted but they only comprised 20% of the total scores.  This is due to the fact that there were a lot of bogus voters (with fake names and non-existent email addresses) and spam votes which almost got this blog suspended by the server.  That is also the reason why Bariles had to stop the voting through this blog on July 27, 2010.

Anyhow, here are the charts of the votes for the two categories tallied from the three sources.

The winner of the INFANT CATEGORY which received 17.22% of the votes counted is Photo Entry #20 featuring the cute and chubby cookie-of-a-girl, Beatrice Benedikt M. Dy.

And the winner of the Toddler Category is the jolly and handsome Aethan Troy S. Lazaro, who was featured in photo #23.

The two winners will each receive a gift certificate worth P2,000, gift certificates from Worlds of Fun, 10% discount on any outlet of Big & Small Group and a Gift each on their birthdays.

And with that, in behalf of the management of the Big & Small Company in GenSan, we would like to say “Congratulations to the winners and of course, to their parents as well!”

Bariles’ Top 10 Most Influential Emerging Blogs for 2010

Posted by bariles On August - 22 - 2010 17 COMMENTS

It has been two years since this blog won in Janette Toral‘s annual Search for the TOP 10 MOST INFLUENTIAL EMERGING BLOGS.  This was in 2008 when GenSan News Online Mag was still known as Bariles Republic.

To be lumped together with the country’s other fledgling but “quite popular” blogs at that time was something that a blogger from Mindanao could only dream of.  Inspired by that recognition, Author Bariles strived on and right now, with almost a million readers already,  his blog lives on and he is proud to say that it has really earned a certain amount of influence in his turf, the Tuna Capital of the Philippines.

Fast forward to today, August 2010.  It’s again that time of the year when bloggers from all over choose their own bets for the Top 10 Most Influential Emerging Blogs Writing Project.

Being a member of the Soccsksargen Bloggers, Bariles would like to be partial to blogs from this side of the Philippines and although they might not be known nationally, as of yet, these blogs have been exerting a great degree of “influence” already in the region, depending on their niches, in the way they are crafted and the manner that they have been bringing information and entertainment to their readers.

The rest of the 10 in Bariles’s list are also from Mindanao and again, he would like to believe that they deserve to be in his TOP 10 Most Influential Emerging Blogs for 2010 and should be recognized nationally.

Without babbling any further, here they are, Bariles’ TOP 10 Most Influential Emerging Blogs for 2010:

  1. Ganda Ever So Much - banker Orman Manansala‘s personal blog is a favorite among the Soccsksargen, Davao and Cagayan de Oro Blogging communities with its no-holds-barred account of everything coming out from the scathing, venomous but mostly lovelorn and wishful mind of the writer.  His tips on love, life and lust should give Dr. Margie Holmes stiff competition.  And I mean, stiff!
  2. Alexis ChuaThis is a self-titled blog from a fresh Accounting graduate of the Mindanao State University. This young blogger could give the older ones a lesson or two on how to write exceptionally well.  A college debater and a multi-awarded student writer, he is one of Mindanao’s blogging communities’ rarest gems.  Hopefully, we don’t lose him to the corporate world.
  3. Kikay Much – is from young and pretty Salon owner and restaurateur Donna Mae Congson.  This blogger’s matter-of-fact and practical takes on fashion, beauty, health and wellness is refreshing at the very least.  Although now a blooming fashionista, she still has got that girly sense of wonder in her writing especially if it’s about a new discovered beauty product, for one.  This makes it a must for a light and amusing read.
  4. A Thousand ShipsIt’s not just a simple photo blog which you forget that easily.  What makes you linger and go over the rest of Mandi Nicolas‘ works from his travels around the world are his captions of each shot.  Each paragraph is painstakingly crafted with exactly the right words to make you see beyond the photo and on to the heart and soul of this former Singapore expat.  It’s one photo blog which will make even the best blog writers out there insecure.
  5. Digital Exposures - Another Photoblog, this time owned by an orthopedic surgeon!  Dr. Remo Aguilar who practices his craft and blogs on the side in his hometown in Tacurong City, Sultan Kudarat just recently added this blog to his incessantly growing list of online journals.  One of the very few photobloggers in this side of Mindanao, he deserves to be in Bariles’ list.  Definitely, the DOCTOR IS IN!
  6. Kusina ni MariaIt’s just a matter of time that Davao City’s most famous lady blogger comes up with her own food blog not because she eats everywhere and gets invited to a lot of restos.  It’s because she is a certified junior chef already after graduating in some short cooking courses in the Durian Capital.  Because of that, Ria Abella Jose can now write with more authority and experience because she knows whereof she speaks.
  7. Plurk DesignsFor the thousands who use Plurk to update their friends, Plurk Designs has acquired a good degree of influence already. Designer and blog owner Lyle Santos has gotten more than the amount messages of gratitude than he ever really needed from plurkers who have used his theme designs.  And if you’re a good friend, he could produce your very own custom-made theme for FREE!
  8. Get PrettifiedI did not know that one of the best lady bloggers in Southern Mindanao is a closet fashionista until I came upon this blog of hers.  The variety of topics Brendel Balaga churns out could delight ladies out there who are on the lookout for the latest fashion and make-over trends and tips.  And lately, she’s been espousing what she writes, looking more fab and svelte than she was before.  That’s making rampa the talk!
  9. Ako Si Rabsky – one of the youngest bloggers to come out of GenSan, Rabsky Villanueva is all of 17 summers.  He is included in Bariles’ list because his well-designed blog has already garnered a considerable degree of influence in the Mindanao State University where he is a 2nd year I.T. student.  It has become a “shop window” of sorts for his fellow students wanting to come up with their very own blogs.  Although he admits that his blog is still in its infancy stage, Bariles feels that including it here will encourage more of his peers to follow in his footsteps.
  10. Mabuhay ang Bagong Kasalauthored by Aileen Apolo, the adopted daughter of Mindanao, and began right after her marriage last year, her blog does not go in one direction but manages to surprise Bariles each time he opens it.  It has household advices, personal musings on her relationship with her “Sweetie” and her son, easy-to-cook recipes, kitchen tips and all sorts of stuff which everyone, not only housewives may find interesting .  Every post is brief and could leave you asking for more.  Who knows? Some bedroom secrets may be spilled soon.  Hehehe! Joke Ate Aileen!

So there!  I hope you could visit these blogs and find out why for Bariles, they are TOPS!

And yes, he would surely be very happy if you could nominate them too in your blogs.  Deadline of submission of your list is on August 31, 2010.  For more information, check out Janette Toral’s guidelines by SIMPLY CLICKING HERE.

The Top 10 Most Influential Emerging Blogs Writing Project for 2010 is brought to us by Events and Corporate Video, Budget Hotel in Makati, Pinoy Party Food, Copyediting Services, PR Agency Philippines, Budget Travel Philippines, Send Gifts to the Philippines, Black Friday Deals, Roomrent – units for rent, Search Profile Index, and Corporate Events Organizer.

Bariles is a Filipino word for “Tuna”, the primary source of income of the people of General Santos City which hosts 6 of the Philippines’ 8 tuna canneries and more than 80% of its tuna processing plants.

The city boasts of the only “Tuna Festival” in the world celebrated every September 5 in commemoration of its charterhood anniversary.

Bariles is also the alias of this blog\'s author who would like nothing than to write about his beloved city by the bay and share it with his kababayans from all over.

He has worked throughout Southeast Asia and Papua New Guinea. Currently, he devotes his time, beauty, and talent in the fields of Communications, Marketing and Media.

He is also the unofficial leader of the Soccsksargen Bloggers, a motley group of online writers who share a common goal to write what\'s true, good, progressive and beautiful about South Central Mindanao and her people.
