Barely two weeks ago, GenSan City Mayor Darlene Antonino-Custodio finally got a glimpse of how her city’s next mall will look like.
The design team of the upcoming SM City GenSan composed of representatives from Monolith Construction Dev. Corp, general contractor; Jose Siao Ling & Associates, architect; and D.A. Abcede & Associates, project manager, paid her a visit at her office at the City Hall. They were accompanied by GenSan Chamber prexy Jan Ced and Architect Michael Ang, project coordinator for SM City GenSan.

"SM CITY GENSAN ARCHITECT JOSE SIAO LING PRESENTS SM CITY GENSAN'S PERSPECTIVES AND PLANS TO GENSAN MAYOR DARLENE CUSTODIO AS ENGR. DENNIS ABCEDE JR. (VP, DAA ASSOCIATES) & ENGR. LITO BABASA (CONSTRUCTION MGR, DAA ASSO) LOOK ON."
It was there that the group headed by SM City Gensan Architect Jose Siao Ling, presented her with the perspectives, floor plans and blue prints of one of the most-anticipated projects in South Central Mindanao. Assisting him in the presentation were Engr. Dennis Abcede, Jr. (D.A.Abecede & Associates VP) and Engr. Mariano T. See Diet (Monolith Construction Dev. Corp. EVP/Gen Manager).

"(LEFT TO RIGHT. PHOTO SHOWS RUDY T. CHUA (DIRECTOR, QUALITY PRE-CAST CONCRETE), ARCHITECT MICHAEL ANG (PROJECT COORDINATOR FOR SM CITY GENSAN), ENGR. DENNIS ABCEDE JR. (VP, DENNIS ABCEDE & ASSOCIATES), ARCHITECT JOSE SIAO LING (PRINCIPAL ARCHITECT, JOSE SIAO LING & ASSOCIATES), MAYOR DARLENE ANTONINO-CUSTODIO, ENGR. MARIANO T. SEE DIET (EVP, MONOLITY CONSTRUCTION DEV. CORP), ENGR LITO BABASA (CONSTRUCTION MNGR, DAA & ASSOCIATES), ENGR JESTON MANANGUETE (GEN. CONTRACTOR, PROJECT MNGR), ENGR VICTORIANO OSIAS (FORMWORKS ENGR, MCDC), AND MR. JAN CED (PRES, GENSAN CHAMBER OF COMMERCE).
Mayor Custodio was visibly impressed with the SM City GenSan perspectives and designs and stayed longer for the dialogue which followed which tackled traffic management, sewerage system, garbage handling, employment opportunities and tax incentives, among other topics. Together with the mayor were City Administator Atty. Jong Gonzales and Chief of Staff Myrna Mejorada.
According to the SM Team, the two-story mall will cover a total of 100,000 sq. meters of floor space, which is bigger than SM City Davao’s 80,000 sq. meters.
Its main frontage will face San Miguel Street which will be widened into a four-lane avenue. To see where it is, click this—> SM City GenSan location.
SM Prime Holdings has already acquired a portion of the triangular lot straddling J. Catolico Avenue and San Miguel Street for this plan. It will also provide the traffic signal system at the junction of Santiago Boulevard and San Miguel.

"THE SM CITY GENSAN PERSPECTIVE OF ITS FRONTAGE FACING SAN MIGUEL STREET."
Very noticeable in the perspectives presented to the mayor is the uniquely designed logo of the mall which displays a bigger and more prominent rendering of the words “GENERAL SANTOS“. From Architect Jose Siao Ling came the answer that the emphasis on the Tuna Capital’s name was due to their knowledge that the people of GenSan are extremely proud of their famous city and this is SM’s way of solidifying it.
(Upon hearing this, Bariles who noted the peculiarity could only gasp, “Whoa GenSan!”)
At the Santiago Boulevard side of SM City GenSan is their terminal for public vehicles like jeeps, vans and probably (as suggested by Mayor Custodio), parking for trucks which are usually the vehicles of choice of excursionists and shoppers from the rest of the region.
For sure, the mayor quipped, once SM City GenSan opens, there will be a beeline of these vehicles to the Tuna Capital and the mall should be ready for this.

"THIS IS THE SM CITY GENSAN PERSPECTIVE OF ITS LEFT SIDE. TAKE NOTE OF THE SECOND FLOOR BALCONY, A FEATURE PRESENT IN NEWER SM MALLS AND THUS DOING AWAY WITH THE BORING BOX STRUCTURES."
To help enliven GenSan’s night life and cement its reputation as Region 12′s entertainment capital, SM City General Santos will house its Al Fresco restaurants and bars on the other side of the mall which will also operate until midnight similar to Robinsons Place. Their row of dining establishments promises a refreshing and relaxing ambience since at its center will be a large dancing fountain, an important water element in the newer malls of today.
To top it all, all the four cinemas of SM City GenSan at the second floor will be 3D-equipped.
Ground breaking and fencing of the compound will start immediatly after September 10, 2010 and based on the design team’s estimates, construction will be finished by 10 months at the very least.
This means therefore, that aside from Robinsons Place GenSan, KCC Mall of GenSan and Gaisano City GenSan, the people of Soccksargen will have another shopping destination in time for Christmas 2011 – and its name is SM City General Santos.
So now, the question is, where would you shop for your Christmas presents in December next year?

FINALLY! After many years of waiting for the entry of SM City-GenSan, it’s here. I’m pretty sure we are all excited of this new development and at least we have already seen the perspective plan of how our SM looks like. I think its really a trend now of a mall developers to designed their buildings to a 2 to 3 storey high. Maybe to save costs, space and mobility among its shoppers. I expect SM to put only four (4) cinemas in our city to avoid saturation especially when their is no blockbuster movies. So, its a mixed feeling whether the design was favolous but what is important is SM City-Gensan finally arrive in our place. Another place to shop among locals and for our dear visitors during holiday seasons. Thanks Bariles for making it first..

Sorry to say this but I’m a bit disappointed at the first look of it. I can’t feel the “WoW” factor in it. Maybe it’s because, it’s drawing nga lang. Pero hindi eh…the Architect himself have presented it, so, more or less ganoon na nga talaga ang magiging look nito. I still keep on convincing myself na maganda nga ito. This is just my comment though regarding sa perspective. Sana walang magagalit hehe.
I’m just as glad as everyone else that SM has finally set it’s foot on GenSan’s ground. Welcome SM City GenSan! And Congratulations Generals! ˆ-ˆ Oh by the way, I so love the idea of putting on the complete name of the City. Thank You SM!

congratulations Generals! another employment opportunity for the generals.
SM has been known for the box type mall for long years.it is just a decade or so when they re-invented. in fairness though to SM, mahirap rin naman mag invest ng malaki lalo na if the market is not as much as in the Metro. we should be thankful that they are here.
Like in SM NOrth edsa, its a box type before until the renovation (the carpark), expansion (the block), another expansion (the annex), etc. this is due to ayala malls coming in — now Trinoma in that area. During my college days, box type na box type lang talag but everytime i visit sm, sobrang grabe ang expansion.
so let us just wait when expansion of SM comes. just like KCC and Gaisano when another mall came in. they keep on renovating and expanding much to the appreciation of the consumers.hehe
while they put up here, they expect income of course. siguro naman tayo di lang gawing tambayan ang malls at magpalamig tapos demand ng demand ng better or much development diba? peace =)
kudos to Gensan and SM

hello people.
some are disgusted about SM being build again in lagao. . .
saka isa pa mas mura ang idle land kesa sa mga improved area kasi taas presyo. at least with the SAlazar llots leased to SM for a dozen of years maging happy ang buong gensan. . . daming pasyalan libre aircon pa. hehehehe
.
hahahahaha

Just a suggestion to the SM Management : Sana they will consider putting up a computerized BOWLING LANES for SM City Gensan. When Jovir Bowling Lanes (formerly Dover lanes) closed a year ago to give way to the clearing of SM property.
I’m pretty sure a lot of those bowling tournaments held before that had been died due to the impending construction will be back again. The General’s are precisely sports buff and health conscious. So I think SM should not be hesitant to add these kind of amenities in their mall since it would also be a crowd drawer.

It’s mind-boggling. We already have three existing malls (robinsons, kcc and gaisano) with a voting population of more than 300thousands only. The city allowed SM to operate but disallowed UST (a university), san miguel beer plant (now in darong), and a tile manufacturing firm (now in digos city) to operate a few years back.
For sure there will be some employement once SM will be fully operational but will also results to some unemployement in others. Net effect, I do not know.
Until now, I do not see the value of kalilangan, tuna and pasko sa gensan festivals. Organizers bragged about them every year and soliciting always. Our city spends millions of pesos, for what? For some festivities, temporary employements for some select people during those times. I’m not quite sure if those events were originally intended to attract what (tourists, investors) or to brag about organizers ideas and talents for shows (hehehe).
Tuna industry is collapsing, unemployement is increasing, during dry spell expect power shortage, increase in criminal activities (carnappings, killings), dengue outbreak, and many more…
Too many problems to solve and overcome, less AIM kagawads brain power available (meron ba) since remote controlled (hehehe)… Funny, just smile at it, para gumana utak…

Guys, there are times when people have to stop being very negative. I tolerate all your rants here but if that’s that only thing you need to say, then better say it elsewhere. My objective as writer of this blog, is to try to feature mostly the developments of the the city of my birth and entice readers to realize the great things that are happening here. It came into being to balance out the insensitive penchant of some media to zero in on violence and murder and sow intrigue and conflict.
That is why it’s just disconcerting and frustrating when some people, generals even, keep on seeing just the downsides on some posts in this blog and digging up old skeletons and unsubstantiated rumors which have nothing to do with what’s being written in the first place.
Freedom is good but we have a responsibility not to veer away from the topics at hand and attack personalities and institutions at will anytime we want. Instead of just complaining, let us try to be PROACTIVE about things. Suggest. Advise. Help out.
And let me remind you – this is not a freedom wall. Comments are being moderated since Day 1. Because if not, then the messages section will be full of spam and garbage, and worse, hatred and vile.
It that happens, then Magandang GenSan will be in vain.
I rest my case, dear readers.
Thank you for your understanding.

I am from Davao and I am very happy with the most recent developments in General Santos City. SM City General Santos will surely be a welcome addition to General Santos’ growing number of malls.
I’m just wondering why some people focus on the mall’s design, even comparing it to SM Lanang. Whatever it is, I’m sure the SM Group has very valid reasons. This project is clearly the result of years of planning, if that means anything to you. Seriously, you can’t say the mall is destined to fail because the design is not as grand as the malls in other cities.
Also, I have always supported the organizers of GenSan’s festivals. Because they have done a great job at promoting a positive image of GenSan. If some of you can’t see the benefit of these festivals to your tourism industry, ewan ko na lang.
Guys, if you really want to see results and end your frustrations on how your city is being run, there’s an appropriate venue for that. Be proactive because whining won’t get you anywhere. Basing from your comments here, I think you believe you know better than your Mayor and councilors so why not do something for your city? Or simply, walk the talk.
To Bariles and the progressive Generals, keep up the good work.

I remember when Bariles featured the JMP building design here. It generated a lot of comments. And then these dwindled when commenters moved on to the next hot blogpost.
Also in previous posts about developments in Gensan, some commenters would draw unnecessary comparisons between Gensan and other nearby cities. If you read the above-post again, it is the SM team who said that SM Gensan is bigger than SM Davao.
Gensan has its own merits that warranted the interests of investors. Now that investments are pouring in, let’s all be happy about it, whether we are Generals or plain cadets.
The more malls there are, the better for us consumers because we have the power to choose where to spend our money.
Keep those positive suggestions and comments coming!

Reading from some of the comments here, I can see that some sectors feel that the local government and the big businesses are doing it wrong…
So, I pose the following challenge:
If you think you know better, then put your money where your mouth is. Stop being a know-it-all arm-chair analyst and be the change that you want to see.
Otherwise, take your pessimistic and uninformed views elsewhere.
By the way, this website was created by and is maintained and paid for by Bariles and his supporters for the purpose of promoting a positive image of GenSan and SoCCSKSarGen to the world.

@Toinks – I’m not sure if you’re serious with your reply so magbinisaya na lang ko para masabtan ko.
When I said, “Put your money where your mouth is..” ang buot pasabot niana is this…
Dali kaayo ingnun, na we have actually done our part as an extraordinary citizen. Pero ang pangutana.. Unsa ug asa man ang pruweba niana?
Na kung gisapot sila kay wala nabuhat ang design ang SM according to their personal taste and standard, naa silay katungod na magbuhat niana under the guise of freedom of speech.
Simple ra man kaayo na.

Here’s another example of “Putting your money where your mouth is…”
Bariles got fed up with how mainstream media portrays General Santos and Mindanao.. Kesyo puro lang giyera, kidnapping, and bombings ang nangyayari dito.
So, instead of whining and complaining sa comment section ng Inquirer.net or ABS-CBNNEWS.com, Bariles decided to put his money where his mouth is and spent his personal money to create GenSantos.com where he can write about progressive news in GenSan.
Now, this is solid proof of being an extraordinary citizen of GenSan.
He became the change that he wanted to see.
Nobody is curtailing your freedom to express your thoughts. Just express it with responsibility and at the proper venue. If you prefer to point out the negative things that you see, feel free but not here because the owner of this site did not create this for such purpose.
You asked me to tell you how to out your money where your mouth is when there is no money in the first place.. OK, I’ll take you up to task. Creating a website at http://www.blogger.com is absolutely FREE. You said maraming magagaling na di nabibigyan ng chance to be heard?

to think de primera klase ang UST. . one of the oldest university in the philippines.

bariles Says:

Toinks Says:
Napaka laking ka eng engan po kung mag aalsa balutan ang Gaisano Mall of GenSan moving to Marbel. hehehe But rumors have it na magpapatayo raw ng Gaisano Citimall sa may koronadal. Hindi pa nga lang confirmed. But It would be a lie kung sasabihin nating hindi feasible ang idea na magakaroon ng Gaisano Citimall sa ciudad ng Koronadal. : )
Magkakaroon pa kaya ng sinehan sa Gaisano Mall of GenSan? hmmm parang may mga works goin on sa dating sinehan nila…ano kaya yon?…

congrats to Gensan at last SM is coming to town !!! Di rin pahuli sa davao..the current sm city davao is undergoing an expansion and renovation starting next year with a 4 storey mall building..on top of this another sm mall is set to rise in Lanang set to open in 2012..so this is a positive sign that the SM group is investing heavily in Mindanao..and of course, Abreeza (Ayala Mall) is set to open next year here in Davao…This put Davao City as the third major city in the country after Manila and Cebu..

KEEP CLEAN Says:
May coming SM nga peru i don’t think if they can properly manage it.As far as my concerned and as what i’ve observed sa ibang malls ditu, most of there staff hindi bayolinte kumilos, yung parang walang pinag aralan na kailangan pa e educate of moral values peru hindi naman lahat.
