In celebration of the National Tourism Week, the local government of General Santos City through its City Economic Management and Cooperative Development Office headed by Mr. Egai Cadiente is spearheading the 2010 Regional Tourism Summit for the next three days, from today, September 28 up to the 30th.
According to the Magandang GenSan Official Site, the Regional Tourism Summit 2010 is an “exploratory forum and plenary presentation of ecotourism development potentials around Region 12. Expected output includes the Integrated Regional Tourism Development Plan. Session topics include issues on IRR on Tourism Act of 2009, basic protocol seminar, local tourism brands and others.”
The RTS 2010 which is the brainchild of GenSan City Mayor Darlene Antonino-Custodio, is the highlight of the set of events prepared for the National Tourism Week celebration in the Tuna Capital. Below is the rationale and details of the 2010 Tourism Summit. In attendance will be national and regional representatives of the Department of Tourism and tourism stakeholders of South Central Mindanao including the private sector and the media.
Bariles is a Filipino word for “Tuna”, the primary source of income of the people of General Santos City which hosts 6 of the Philippines’ 8 tuna canneries and more than 80% of its tuna processing plants.
The city boasts of the only “Tuna Festival” in the world celebrated every September 5 in commemoration of its charterhood anniversary.
