The Guinness World Records has definitely confirmed that General Santos City is the new World Record Holder for the Largest Fish Display through a certificate which arrived very recently at the office of the PFDA (Philippine Fisheries Development Authority).

The Guinness Book of World Records Certificate says, “The largest fish display consists of 25,594.49 kg (56,426 lb oz) of yellowfin tuna and was achieved by the City of General Santos (Philippines) in General Santos City, South Cotabato, Philippines on 11 September 2014.

Earlier, an email sent to the Philippine Fishport Development Authority, relayed the same message.

This record breaking feat occured almost a year ago, September 11, 2014 during the celebration of the city’s annual Tuna Festival commemorating Gensan’s Charterhood.  As early as dawn, fishermen and fishport workers unloaded 946 pieces of tuna, weighing 15 kgs on the average, from 20 fishing vessels at Market One.   These were then weighed, later coming up with a total of the 25.6 metric tons.

The previous closest record holder of “Largest Seafood Display” is Netherlands, for its display of 4.5 metric tons only.

With this achievement, Gensan City Mayor Ronnel C. Rivera plans to have a marker heralding it, built at the Fishport. Indeed, a very apt pronoucement from the mayor since this is one very remarkable feat that again confirms our being the Tuna Capital of the Philippines and rightly so, I may say, the Tuna Capital of the World, too.

From us here at Gensan News Online Mag, CONGRATULATIONS Generals!

Now let’s see which country and city can beat what General Santos City just did!
