[dropcap]T[/dropcap]he Local Government of General Santos recently approved and released the official Kalilangan 2018 Schedule of Activities. To be managed and run again by the Mindanao State University, this year’s Kalilangan commemorates the city’s 79th Foundation Anniversary.
The Theme for the Kalilangan Festival 2018 is “Cultivating Cultures, Inspiring New Ways“.
FEBRUARY 22, 2018. THE OPENING.
Kalilangan Festival 2018 will officially run from February 22 – 27 and will commence on February 22 with, for the first time in decades, a Civic Military Parade, HUDYAT PARADA, to be participated in by schools, government offices, NGOs and private institutions. We used to join these parades when we were kids in the 70s and this used to be the highlight of the city’s anniversary.
Other activities are: the AGRI FAIR Opening at the Oval Grounds, Fiestahan sa Barangay, also at the Oval Plaza and DAYUN KAMO: The Kalilangan 2018 Opening Program.
FEBRUARY 23, 2018.
February 23 is jampacked with activities not only at the Oval Plaza but at various venues in the city. Phela Grande Convention Center is host to the Dreamers of Weave, Weavers of Dream Fashion Show from 5:30Pm while it will be the turn of SM Trade Hall on February 24.
Veranza Mall is venue to the Palabunyan Sayaw Musika Cultural Workshop from 9am – 5pm. At the other side of the street, Gaisano Mall of Gensan is running the Kalilangan Fitness Fever 6.
In downtown Dadiangas, on that evening, the Farmers and Fisherfolks Night shall unfold at the Oval Plaza Grounds along with Kalinaw Mindanao: A Jam for Peace and DXGS Musical Jamboree and Live on Stage Drama Presentation.
FEBRUARY 24, 2018
The 3rd day of Kalilangan Festival 2018 is packed with sports events like the 2nd SJSA Kalilangan Festival National Jetski at the Queen Tuna Park, the 2018 Kalilangan Sox Chess Championship at the Veranza Mall and the 7th Kalilangan Invitational Table Tennis Tournament at Robinsons Place Gensan.
Must watch however is the “Aral Di Munan”, an IP Dance Showcase at the Oval Pavilion from 3pm onwards.
A very important happening on February 24 is the dedication of the Circumferential Road to Albert Morrow at a tribute to him at the Junction of the Fishport Road at 10am. F
FEBRUARY 25, 2018
Two days before the culmination, more than 10 events will be happening separately and some simultaneously at the Oval Plaza and at the city’s malls. Most notable however, especially for culture buffs, is the “Kadindang sa Tademan” Moro Dance Competition at 3pm at The Pavilion and the Sayaw Pinoy 2018: Lowland Dance Competition at 7pm at the Oval Plaza Stage.
On February 26, 2017, the crowd-drawer Kalilangan Fest Invitational Motocross Competition & Enduro Cross will be staged at the Makar National Highway.
FEBRUARY 27, 2018
The highlight of the Kalilangan Festival 2018 on February 27 showcases the events that transpired when General Paulino Santos landed on the shores of Dadiangas with the first batch of pioneers 79 years ago. At dawn, 4am, a Kapehan sa Kalilangan will transpire at Pioneer Avenue to be followed by the much-awaited and colorful Parada ng Lahi: Kadena de Amor. Capping this is a Wreath-Laying Ceremony at the Shrine of General Santos.
The merry-making goes fever pitch at 2pm when the Kadsagayan Street Dance Competition starts from Veranza and wind up at the Oval Plaza. Simultaneously, the “Love Is The Answer” Chorale Concert from RMMC will also be transpiring at the SM Trade Hall at 4pm.
As always, a Grand Fireworks Display will be a fitting finale to the city’s celebration after the Agi’g Dalit Pasalamat: The Closing Ceremony at the Oval Plaza Stage.
